New member disco v8 overheating

Hello all thought I better say hello I have a disco 2 v8 and a range rover P38 autobiography 4.6 the rangy is off the road at the moment I think its got a liner issue also the disco overheated last night I think the thermostat has failed to open the rad is hot at the top and cold the rest any ideeas I put a new rad on the disco about a year ago

will do must add the temp guage was reading normal but the header tank was steaming its head off like I said the rad was red hot on the top but only warm all over also the bottom hose connected to the thermostat was cold the other two hoses were red hot sounds like a stuck stat do you think

put cold stat in bowl of boiling water and see what happens.
