Hi everyone.

I wrote my Jeep off in the snow and have decided to get what I think is a nice specimen for its age.
Its a 2002 (02) TD6 HSE with full service history and 100,000 miles on the clock for the, hopefully agreed, price of just £10k.
Standard trim, 4xBrand new tyres and chrome side bars.

It all looks fine and is in good order and whilst im realistic that it make have a few character items when I see it in the flesh and will need a budget for maintenance and servicing I'm looking for a heads up on any key areas I should be checking out for. Common issues, major services (Cam/Air suspension etc).

This car really is the top of my budget right now, whilst keeping enough in the bank for a rainy day.
Hopefully though it will be a good value purchase for 18 months until I'm able to sell it on and have £20k to spend on a younger model.

Any advice welcome.

Cheers everyone and thanks in advance.

That's bottom book price so, if everything is in order, would be a good buy.

With 100K on the clock, you might find it difficult to buy a warranty package, so a contingency fund is a good idea.

Good luck!

Yes very pleased on the price.
He didnt really want to shift but I got him down £750 on what was an already good price i thought. It all looks fine but i've not seen it in the flesh but its an old school older gentleman who has had the paintwork fixed at a specialist etc recently to get it ready to sell.

Realistic it probably is due a service (last done about 12k ago) and likely new pads (pads and disks replaced at 83k).

And whilst im great at haggling im not a mechanic so was wondering on what i should keep an eye out for.

Never been a fan of warrenty packages for anything as it becomes a nightmare trying to get them to actually pay out on anything. Hopefully about £2k over 18-24 months should suffice... (he said slightly optimistically).

The plan is i'm going to put about 30k miles on it over 2 years before selling it on.

Same as mine - Adriatic Blue with Parchment interior.

She looks tidy.

Check for evidence of coolant leaking around the reservoir at the front right of the engine bay and, with the engine running, check that the coolant hoses are not rock hard.

The engine should feel and sound tight and she should change gear smoothly up and down the box.

Check inside the spare wheel compartment for signs of water ingress.

Make sure no error codes appear in the display when switching on or off the ignition.

Check that all the suspension modes work and try it in the varies high/low ratio and manual gear settings.

Drivers manual is a must, as the trip computer settings are not intuative.

There is more than a passing similarity!
The wheels on the one im buying is the only thing im not happy with but c'est la vie.

Thanks for the tips, really appreciated. Im off too google what a cooling pip looks like as I wouldnt know how to spot one if you hit me with it!

lol.

Milage is high but not startship. im not unduely worried unless you're telling me that RR's fall apart post 100k

I'd put 75,000 on my Jeep from new in 5 years so this is on a par with that. Seen plenty more out there selling with a LOT higher.

Dont worry about the mileage, I've seen earlier ones with 200k miles still up for sale at 10 grand. From previous experience with the BMW 3.0 diesel, 150k seems to be the time when things start to go wrong (turbos and autoboxes usually).

Ask if its had the centre diff recall done, a free fix from the dealer. I've heard of a few cases where this issue has caused the propshaft to lock solid and take out the diffs and gearbox. You need to raise the suspension up and look for a universal joint roughly halfway in line with the front doors looking forwards, if its not been done you'll see the propshaft enters into the diff housing with no UJ. There is a handy website listing most issues, www.rangerovers.net

I've had two now and apart from silly niggles they are a great car.

Mike

The cooling pipe to test is the large diameter black hose going from the top of the radiator to the engine. It might be hot, so be careful when you touch it. If the engine has pressure issues, it will fell rock hard.

I wouldn't be too concerned about the mileage. Mine has done just over 130K and still feels great to drive. However, £10K book price is based on 80K miles, so you might be able to haggle a bit more on the price.

Also, does is have a touchscreen satnav system? If so, that's a real bonus. If it has the single CD/LCD Display unit in the dashboard , check to see if it has the the premium Harmon Kardon "DSP" entertainment system fitted. You can derermine this by removing the panel on the left hand side of the rear compartment and looking to see if there is a subwoofer loudspeaker unit fitted up by the wheel arch, which looks like this. 2003-2005 Range Rover Subwoofer

If it's not there you have the "basic" sound system, which is still good, but suck some air through your teeth and knock him down a bit more on price.

PS - you will be able to upgrade to the DSP system and fit the factory carphone kit if you want, but you won't be able to fit the Range Rover touchscreen satnav system, as the wiring loom is completely different. I had the basic system, but recently fitted an after-market 7 inch touchscreen system, which required a bit of fettling to the dashboard.

Keep us posted with developments.

thanks for all the great tips, really appreciated.

Parkers gives it a PartEx of 10,900 and a private of sale of 12,700
for the extra 25k they suggest taking off 1,000 so all things conisdered im ok at 10,000.

No sat nav, but I might be looking at some kind of aftermarket device in the near future as it is something I like and its not pretty having trailing cables to the cigarette lighter for a tom tom power cable.

Thanks for the tip on the sound system. I'll take a look but am pretty sure its a standard trim HSE, hence the basic alloys etc.

Must confess though, im ignorent as to what was standard on the 02 HSE.

Starting to get excited now, sitting on the train with 10k in my pocket and on my way to collect it.

Cheers

M.

How's the motor???

Not a heap of difference between HSE and Vogue. Main ones are the touchscreen satnav system and heated rear seats.

You can pick up a set of almost new wheels and tyres on ebay for much less than a set of new tyres, so you might want to consider doing these and selling yours on. That's what I did.

I don't think you'll have much lick getting an extended warranty policy, since it has doe more than 100K miles.

Take a look here to see how I upgraded my in-car entertainment system.

Thanks for all the info guys. I bought it (£9800) and the 300m drive home was pretty faultless so am very happy. Full service history, 4 months MOT & Tax and half a tank of gas.

All the suspension settings and hi/lo settings work fine. Gear box is smooth and quiet and no signs of cooling leakages or hard hoses. I looked for signs of the recall fix being done underneath but to be honest dont have a clue what im looking for so will try and post a photo.

Only a few minor niggles and one slightly less minor which I plan to hopefully circumvent. Only 1 real 'issue', listed first, with the rest being very minor things I'd just like to resovle to keep the car looking mint but am prepared to live with and expected in a vehicle of this age.

1. Audio display is corrupted with some of the pixels in the LED display not working. It doesnt hamper the operation but its not easy to read. Allegedly this is about £400 to fix but I imagine its an easy part to salvage? Ideally though im hoping there is a way just to rip it all out an replace with something more modern (touch screen?).

2. Power on/off button on Audio is a bit loose (see above?)

3. FIXED - Sound system appears to only come from front speakers, although i've not actually checked if there are rear speakers and it is just the basic sound system (no additional amp in rear wheel arch). Just needed to adjust the Fade setting... duh!

4. FIXED - All three Cigarette lighters (power sockets) in the centre armrest dont work although the one in the boot does. Hopefully this is a fuse issue? Also two of the cig lighters/covers are missing (the rear and internal). - Just needed to replace the fuses. 'Borrowed' the one for the 'rear heated seats' since there are no rear heated seats... replacement on order just in case it's cross utilised for anything.

5. The lumber button on the drivers seat has been pushed through and is loose inside. Hopefully just a job for a child with small fingers.

6. The internal rear load bay flap which covers the lower boot hinge doesnt fall automatically. (am I being really petty now?). Guess its needs a bit of oil or a new spring somewhere.

7. Couple of VERY minor wear n tear marks on the interior. Leather/paint product to cover them?

8. Couple of scuffs in the rear facing part of the centre console where children have kicked it. Again hopefully this is just a small paint/coating touchup job to fix.

9. The only key fob is well worn and there is excess movement in the 'lock' button. Is it possible to replace just the fob part? Also suspect I'll need to drop £150 for a new key also for the other half.

10. Electric wing mirrors 'park retract' position. Pressing the button causing them to fold in and then immediately fold out again. (Now i am just being petty as I had this on my Jeep but used it about once a year)

11. Light behind the 'service interval display' on the dash doesn't work. Possibly a bulb?

12. Steering Column does not go up/down. In/Out works fine. No sound at all, possible motor? or just stuck?

13. Missing Cigarette lighter/power cap in rear of centre console. Need to work out what what should be fitted here. Photos anyone?

14. Missing Cigarette lighter/power cap inside of main cubby of centre console. Need to work out what what should be fitted here. Photos anyone?

Any comments or advise greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Thanks Desticado.

Even the most basic audio set-up has front and rear speakers. Could just be the fader settings on the head unit need adjusting.

You can get the pixels on the MID unit fixed for c. £140 on ebay. Don't try the DIY fixes advertised. I did and destroyed the whole thing!!!!

If the rest of your list is anything to go by, looks like you bagged yourself a bargain.

Cheers!
