Continual electrical problems on my 1977 Series 3. Sometimes the horn works or it doesn't, sometimes it blows the flasher relay or doesn't, sometimes headlights work on main beam or not, indicators may work if they feel like it! I think I should be looking at a new loom but probably what I really need is a good Landrover electrician in Dderbyshire, can anyone help please.
Cheers.

Hi

personally when I had my series 3 I also had a lot of wiring issues, left it and then one day the dashboard started to smoke , luckily it didn’t catch fire

removed the entire dashboard loom and built a new one , however I see now u can buy looms from the likes of auto sparks etc

https://www.autosparks.co.uk/

Maybe someone in the past hasn’t done things properly , would at least have a look behind ur instrument panel to see what condition it’s in but if it bad would just get a new loom for peace of mind

if u do replace the loom take plenty of pictures before hand as that will also be very useful for u

hope that’s of some use to u

Many thanks that's helpful and sounds like my problem. Unfortunately I'm hopeless with electrics if it's not basic. A new wiring loom is beyond me which is why I need an electrician. The picture taking is a good point.

great it was of some use, it wouldn’t hurt to at least unscrew ur instrument cluster and carefully pull it forward to see if u can see any melted cables or wires that arnt connected to anything

Do u have a cover over ur centre dials as that’s another place where someone might have left wires, particularly if there still live

plus 1 what @Beneagles mentions with regards to the earth’s as indeed if there bad can cause all sorts of issues with things flickering , going on and off over a bump etc , sometimes u have to run new earths

many times u can look where many of the wires join into a fuse box or sometimes a terminal block , or sometimes when previous owners have just twisted wires together and wrapped insulating tape around the wires , therefore in time causing alot of issues

if u start by at least looking around under the bonnet , ur battery under the seat , then behind ur instrument panel, etc , then taking some pictures and posting them here there’s many of us that can at least tel, u if they look bad or not

hope that at least gives u a starting point , plus maybe someone on here might know a good auto electrician that can help u , but know there’s plenty of extremely knowledgeable members here ,

ps, shame ur not closer as would have helped u

You can't have too many good earths.
:)

amen to that , lol, found the front wing looms seem to get bodged the most , or behind the centre dials where someone has fitted a radio or CB, cutting into other wires by just twisting them together , no solder or tape , lol

Very satisfying though having a set of side clippers and cutting the lot out and starting again with a nice new loom or section with proper connections etc

Thanks a lot guys. A lot of useful information. At least I can removed the binacle and have a look. I've done it many times replacing the flasher relay. Problem was when I bought her the pervious owner fitted a lot of "extras" like radio, spot lights etc. There are a lot of inline fuses in some funny places.
I'll take her to bits tomorrow or the day after and have a better look than I have in the past.
Much appreciated
Tim
