Disco 2 New issue: starting

hi folks

I have a new problem that has surfaced in the last week. My D2 TD5. I put the key in the ignition and turn to start. The usual lights come on but NOTHING. The starter doesn't even make a sound. It is like a starter inhibitor on an automatic when in Drive (but I have a manual). Usually, after another two goes it will start just fine with no issue.

I think it must either be the starter/solenoid itself, or the immobiliser.

Ant ideas or suggestions? Are their 'known issues' with sticking starters?

Does it make a loud click from the starter when you turn the ignition key?

If it does it is the solenoid connectors.

about a tenner for a kit.

No it doesn't- at least I cant hear a click. I may try opening the bonnet to see if I can hear something.

When I say loud....

well it is noticeable if you are in a quiet place. comes from in the engine bay , drivers side at the bottom.

If you do not have a click, then i would check the solenoid wire is connected well and is not a bit loose.

But, also if there is not a click, are you getting in and starting the car straight away after unlocking it?

What is the little red light doing on the dashboard?

This could also be a difficulty with the proximity loop on the steering column lock.
I have found that sometimes when I'm in a hurry I jump in, stick the key in the ignition and give it a twist and nothing happens.
So, I start again but this time with a deliberate bit of patience. I put the key in the lock ..... then twist it ..... and then it starts like nothing ever happened.
Could just be the very short period required for the immobiliser to recognise that the correct key fob has properly triggered the proximity circuit.

Blimey, you must be quick.......never had that.......I would question if something was starting to fail...

Have had the unlock, open doors , then spend a few minutes doing something to find the passive immobiliser has kicked back in, only get this when I am using one of my spare keys, as they do not have the second yellow chip on the card. ( rover 75 key fobs, but cheaper than D2 ones) just relock and unlock straight away andturn the ignition. Jobs a good un.

Not a case of being quick, more a case of impatience sometimes and starting to twist the key as I'm pushing it into the lock.
Anyway it's worth a check.

Oh , definitely worth thinking about, which is why I asked n the above post about what the led is doing, as the immobiliser should be off when you unlock with the fob, open the car door and get in, it should not engage for 30 seconds. On my original pucka D2 key in fact the fob does not even need to be next to the passive coil in the ignition for it to communicate. It can be in my lap , if I use a std steel key in the ignition.

Better start with simple things first: check the small lucar connector on the starter solenoid first cos it used to get loosened, if that is OK check fusible linkFL12 and swap relays R2(starter) with R3(headlamp wash)... immobiliser means that the red alarm LED comes on when youn turn ignition and it's not the case as long as the car was properly unlocked.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
Of course I couldn't replicate the problem today when it is parked in my driveway and I don't need to go anywhere!
I will check the connections on the starter motor though in case the wiring is loose.
No doubt it will start playing up again when I am in cold wet windy weather and in a hurry.
