Nearly finished fitting my new front axle today.
I should have started earlier in the morning as that way I would have been completely finished by tea-time but I had the old one off in a couple of hours and by the time I packed up at 4PM the new one was in place with radius-arms connected and new springs, turrets etc fitted.
Connect steering, panhard rod & new SS flexi-hoses tomorrow morning, bleed through, fill with lubricants and a test-drive should be underway by elevenses.

Moving a fully dressed front axle single-handed out of the garage and under the vehicle was a bit of a pain but I used my trolley-jack c/w cross-beam adaptor and managed ok, I attached a rope to the nose of the diff to stop it trying to roll off. Anyone who has tried to lift a front axle will bear out just how heavy they are so I can recommend this method if you are working single-handed like me.
Three pairs of axle stands also came in very handy. One pair to support the LR and another pair to support each of the two axles, don't want them rolling around on the floor and being off the ground it is easy to get the jack underneath when they need moving.

Nothing wrong with the old axle but a NOS TD5 item c/w calipers etc seemed too good a bargain to miss. Meant replacing the radius-arms as well (mine were the narrow type) but with a new set of bushes in place should see me set up for a while.
Old axle will need to find a good home. Teflon swivels are excellent plus I had only recently replaced the (vented) discs & pads. Radius arms were brand-new (c/w bushes) earlier this year so will list the whole lot in the FS section very soon.

youd struggle to recondition one for that ,so not bad at all

That was my thinking. List is over £4K but several places are now doing them for under £1K and when you consider what you are getting it makes it a no brainer.

All finished today, unexpectedly had to replace the panhard rod bushes so that delayed me a little but all done. Even had time to replace the rear springs as well.

"I'm missing something... What's the new axle? "

The big black thing sitting in front of the vehicle.

"Looks good. Out of interest are you breaking the old one for spares? "

Not breaking, just need to get rid. Am going to list in the FS section along with a load of other parts. PM sent.

Nothing different apart from the fact it is TD5 (mine was the 1986 original) and that it is brand spanking new (still in the crate).
List is over £4K but being NOS they are being sold off at £850 (other places are doing them for nearer £1K) which in no way can be called expensive. Work out the prices separately to rebuild your own axle and you can see what a bargain they are bearing in mine everything is brand new and not reconditioned :- Casing, diff, driveshafts & CV joints, swivels, hubs & bearings, vented discs, calipers, pads & pipes, drag-link & ball-joints. They even come filled with oil (diff) and grease (swivels).

Sounds like a great deal to me! :)

My 300 tdi front poo'd itself whilst doing 50mph the panhard rod bracket broke off the axle and was one hell of an experience
The shudder up until I got it stopped was big
The bracket area was thin and rusted so I chucked another axle under that night till the early hours (needed it to get to work)
Hmmm happy days
