Hi, 4 weeks ago I bought a black V plate 5dr Freelander XDI for what I thought was a bargain £1640. What a nightmare it’s been. Firstly I am Andrew 24 from Darlington, this Freelander is my 9th car I have had many MG-Rover cars since I passed my test in 2005 as well as Jags/Imprezas I have been though the lot. I also have an MG Maestro Turbo (No500) currently in storage which will be getting put back on the road next year.
Anyhow the Freelander, I really shouldn’t have bought it lucky my mates a mechanic. Faults fixed and that need fixing so far (If anyone could answer them here it would be much appreciated but if not I will post separate threads in the correct part of the forum)
VCU making a hell of a noise- replaced with a refurbished unit from Freelander spares (still making a slight noise, bloke from Freelander spares said it’s not much to worry about probably the IRD/diff check the oil first not done yet)
Tracking way out- sorted
Now the engine arrr L I have had Rovers with L series diesels in before but none as bad as this hopefully and can it sorted or I am going to have to cut my losses.
Crank oil seal leaking – Mates going to sort this hopefully this week, also replace the top boost hose.
Takes ages to start- and when it does eventually start kicks all sorts of colours of smoke out and lots of it. This is my main worry, done a bit of googling and going to try changing the coolant temp sensor first (bought) if not I understand to check the timing next, then fuel pump if it’s still refusing to turn over in less than 30 seconds I take it that I have a warn engine and I think I will just throw the towel in.
No hot air through vents- New problem that started 2 days ago just in time for the freezing weather, if it’s the heater matrix its going, what else could it be, thermostat? I will ask my mate to have a look.
Also the heated rear screen and electrical mirror control do not work and the aircon needs re-gassing. Can anyone tell me which fuses protect these as I haven’t got the handbook? Hopefully it’s just the fuses. Or and the hill decent doesn’t work but I think this is the least of my worries ha. It looks smarter though I have bought new number plates/spare wheel cover/mats/ removed tow bar etc just hope I can get it to go as well now.
Cheers Andrew Calvert

Welcome to the mad house:clap2::clap2::clap2::clap2::clap2:

Not wanting to be the bearer of bad news, but with all this rain, the doors will be falling off your Gaylander any day now as well:D:D:D:D:p:p:p:p;);):rolleyes:

To be fair they dont just fall off, they slowly drop and sag which gives plenty of time to catch it and gaffer tape them up :D

Thanks for the enthusiastic welcome lol. I bought it from a sold as seen place and have spent a bit of money and time on it so want to get it right if at all possible so I can actually use it day to day. The only other option I see available would be to part ex it (like the previous owner has done) but as I said I want to try sort it out now and hope it’s not too much of a money pit. I will post about the fuses I the Freelander forum, with most probably lots of other questions. It’s also flat as a fart so that needs sorting at some point as well.

Cheers for the welcomes, had a good look round the site seems a hive of information which by the looks of it is going to come in useful quite a lot ha.
