Thanks, i will get one ordered up. Now This will sound like a silly question. What size Jubilee clips will i need? I'm guessing 45mm-60mm?

Also I have decided while I am at it I am going to do the EGR bypass/blanking as well. I have seen loads of them on ebay for sale.
Are there any that i should stay away from or any recommended?

Sounds like you've had a bit of a scare but it's probably OK. The coolant had probably never been changed hence the brown colour, most cars I buy are like that. It also sounds like the thermostat is gone so the mod is a cheap relatively easy way to fix it, with a dodgy thermostat the temp gauge will only get to 1/4 or 1/3 the way up. (It should sit at half way when correct)
I hope you used OAT coolant (pink) as mixing with the blue stuff could cause blockages. I'm not sure how you were draining it before but I usually go for the lower hose on the rad, as Nodge says drain it a couple of times before putting coolant in to get rid of the dishwasher tablet. Also not sure about the circlip size but take a few measurements and any car parts supplier will sort you out for a few pence.

Yes I used the pink OAT coolant.
I flushed everything through a few times by removing the bottom hose. I even top the top hose off as well and put water through the radiator using a hose pipe.
I will keep an eye on the coolant but will probably change the coolant again in a few weeks and flush the system again just to try and get it wven cleaner.
Fingers crossed it will all be ok and even better when I have done the thermostat mod and the egr as well.

What has everyone found to be best to clean the inlet manifold when I do the egr bypass/blank?
I soak it in heating oil (Kerosene) overnight. Then scrape out the goop that is left. I then rinse it out with petrol to dry it off. Sometimes a blast from the pressure washer is needed, before the petrol drying stage. The inlet ports of the head will need cleaning out too.

So just to update you all.
I spent a few hours working on the freelander on Sunday. I fitted the new thermostat into the top radiator hose and while I was at it I fitted the EGR valve blank/bypass and cleaned the inlet manifold.
I also gave the leather seats a good clean as they had been neglected over its years.

Getting the thermostat into the hose was really really tough! I'm not sure if some hoses are different sizes but I didn't expect it to be that tight.

The egr mod was a doddle.

After it was all fitted i took it for a short drive. By about 2.5 miles the temp gauge was At 12oclock.

So that's the coolant changed
Egr mod done
Thermostat mod done
Leather cleaned

The hardest things out of all of the work was getting the sump guard off (2 bolts are hidden and hard to get to under the front bumper) and getting the thermostat into the hose.

Next it's going into a Land Rover specialist to have the rear diff mount front bush replaced. I would of had a go at that myself but don't fancy it without any ramps etc.
Plus it's only £61 genuine part and fitted.

Thanks to everyone who offered support and advise.
