new engine

hi all again i have a 2.5 n/a engine in a mod 1991 defender what is the largest engine i can fit in this landy with out to much trouble and what do you think it would cost

Without trouble would be another 2.5 na. Moderate trouble would be a 200tdi. Slightly more trouble would be a 300tdi or v8. But there's loads of non landrover engines that can be glued in.
Money varies from a £100 potential dog off eBay to £2000 fora recon engine.

What are the laws in France concerning engine swaps?

Also, you need to be far more precise on what you are wanting. In theory any engine could be made to fit, but obviously may come with higher costs and far more work...

27 litre V12 Merlin aero engine maybe

Certainly possible, but MAJOR work and massive amount of money.

Common swaps would be:

-another 2.5Nad
-2.5 petrol
-2.5 TD 19j
-2.5 200Tdi
-Rover V8, 3.5 - 4.6 litre

Less common
-2.5 300Tdi
-2.0 Mpi
-2.5 Td5

Even less common:
-BMW 2.8i petrol
-BMW 2.5 TD
-BMW 3.0 TD

As the 2.8 was fitted to South African Defenders. And the other engines are found in the p38a and L322 Range Rover.


Non Land Rover engines
-Ford V6 (Essex I think, 3.8)
-Perkins diesel 2.0
-Cummins TD 5.9 or 6.7
-Detroit Deisel 6.2 or 6.6
-Chevy SBC V8
-Chevy LS1 V8
-Ford 5.0 Modular Cougar V8

Hi thanks for all that info i dont know the laws here yet have yet to find them out. i just wanted a little more power as on the motor way up hill is very slow

I've been looking into this myself. 200tdi LHD kit is rare. RHD is " Easy", as it can be robbed from a 200tdi Disco RHD without much effort.

300tdi and MWM International 2.8 HS both require some finessing, moving welds on the chassis, maybe cutting bulkhead too.

for V8, I think a few Rover V8 may fit easily, worth doing if you've fixed the slipped liners beforehand. A bit more effort, but the adapter kit for the GM LS V8 engines from the later model pickups are available here in the US and Canada, and make for a modern powerful setup.

Those are about the only steps i'd follow, and surely start with a 200tdi from a Disco on an RHD if I had the chance.
