New discs

HELP! sorry all I need help again! needed to fit new front discs on my 90 all was going well until I tried to get the centre hub off, the 5 bolts removed circlip and washer removed but the hub will not move on the splined shaft, any ideas on how to get it off ?

LOL used a size 6 removal tool no joy !

Just get something in the gap to prise them apart. a chisel or similar is good, just be careful not to damage anything - once you break through the sealant/rust thats holding them together, they should just come apart easily.

If you're replacing disks, chances are it hasnt been apart for quite a while!

Where the splined shaft is sticking out of there is a threaded part, this is the stub axle. It may be covered in grease but there is two hub nuts and a locking washer on the stub axle. This is what holds the hub on

Ah the drive flange, sorry I misread. Yeah just get a screwdriver in behind it and prize it out

tap it a bit, all you're doing is breaking the rust and stuff, with a bit of a tap it should be fine.

maybe a bit of easing oil too?

you could also try roatating the hub, in theory the hub should be able to spin separately from the flange (as the bolts you removed make sure they spin together)

I assume the vehicles not in diff lock. If you could get something clamped onto the flange e.g. a g clamp or similar you could use that as leverage to turn it. As has been said it should turn no problem with the bolts out. And don't be shy with penetrating oil or some freeze and release spray if you have any

If you cant make it turn to break the seal with a hammer then there is something badly wrong, try driving it on full lock both ways (don't know which side it is) and give it some stick, should break free.

dont do anything youll regret, tap away with a hammer & a screwdriver it will release.
If this is a td 5 their is only one locknut when you get in there.

Just keep tapping on each of the 'flats' of it .. if you try to gas axe it you'll feck a lot more and need to replace way more than your discs ..

All you need to do is break the seal between the face and a gasket, though many have sealant too, but just be patient, lots of evenly spaced tapping and it will come loose.

Thanks to you all for the advice, got the bitch off in the end, 5 hours of swearing and cursing, broken chisels ect. just to let you know it was rust **** crap on the splines, all back together with loads of copper slip so it will all come apart when my new calipers arrive, they were knackered to!

its a problem that started with the 300 tdi but is a lot worse on the td5s ,it is lack of lubrication ,earlier models allowed oil from swivel housing to reach cv/drive member splines,the later dont ,unless you do it your self as you have

Heh, I never twigged! Cheers James, clears up a little issue I used to regularly have before I started slathering the splines (300Tdi Disco) in CopperSlip!!

that would explain why it came off comparatively easier on my 200tdi!
