Soooooo, the journey home complete, I have decided............ I still love my L322 and at 17yrs old I would not swap her for the brand new Land Cruiser. No, I am not delusional. If you gave me the Land Cruiser I would sell it and keep the money to ensure my Golden Girl stayed in tip top condition for as long as possible.
The good bits
Top of the range so loaded with every toy
It was brand new so everything worked.
Really nice presence on the road, nice height to see what is going on. But, no different to the L322.
That's all I can think of as ' good'
The flip side
As with the Disco Sport, too much time could be spent trying to find exactly which toy you want, rather than looking at the road. I know this is how things are now, but, with everything smooth, or on the display, there really is a lot of 'bums that's the wrong button', when getting used to the vehicle. Even simple things like adjusting the heat , when driving through dark roads, takes eyes off the road. I sweated like a pig for almost 30 miles at one point because I couldn't take my eyes off the road long enough to find the correct, lovely , same height, colour , shape , 'button' , to push.
Cruise control button, sorry, stalk, hiding under the steering wheel, sort of below and behind the windscreen wiper stalk. Who the France thought that was a good idea!
Which leads nicely into where the France is the filler cap release. Yeah that one was fun. Actually had to RTFM for that!
I could go on about buttons and gadgets and which prat thought to put what!!! , where??? but I'll leave that for now.
The seats. Oh the seats boys and girls! Those beautiful looking, black, leather seats. That were like sitting on a bloody granddad chair. You know the ones, straight backed, winged things. With cushions fit to break your cheeks. It took about 5 miles before the back of my legs were sore. Especially the parts at the edge of the seat. I have never been so disappointed in the look of something in a long time. It is most likely how my Mother felt when she found out Rock Hudson was gay.
So , on to the ride. Like bouncy castles, or water beds from the 80s? Then you'll love the Land Cruiser. It doesn't give up on the bounciness, no matter the speed or road type. It's like a goddarn labrador puppy!
Fuel economy...... how about No. It did an average of 31.8mpg and I don't have a heavy right foot. The Golden Girl does the same run on an average of 30mpg. So not a big difference for 17yrs.
Acceleration, forget it. The LC does not know how to pick up her skirts and run, the way the much maligned Td6 does. I got caught out a couple of times, before I realised the LC is a steady runner, no sprint in it.
Oh and just before I finish what a weird gear 'stick' set up. Are they scared it might jump out the gear you actually chose?
This all of course is only my opinion, but over 4 days city driving and over 10hrs , bum in seat on the way back, is as good a test drive as any. I also noticed very few of them on the roads. Yes it was dark a lot of the way, but I did not see one on my side of the m/way in whole trip. Saw one newish one, around Lockerbie and one rather old one near Hamilton Services. They must be selling, I just don't know where.
