Hey all,

New owner of a 97 Land Rover Discovery 1 300tdi Auto. Made in Brum and exported to Japan. She has 130k on the clock and not bad on the rust front. Need a new boot floor and rear arches, rust has taken hold but not got through fully yet. The interior is coming out so its a good time to weld in new and not have to worry about it again.

Breather kit fitted full service and brakes done already, snorkle due once i can get the waterpump sorted and over to the garage to get fitted. Winch on the front due once the securty is sorted.

I'm interested in securing the disco as they seem to have some quirks that ill not detail here as we are open forum and someone has already tried the rear boot and window's.

Be interested to hear what others have done in this area, im looking at a disk lock an ard case for the peddles and have got a quote on Alarm/ Tracker etc. The boot door seems to be a major weak point.

Speak with you all soon.

Ben

Welcome.
Has the car still got its edc injection pump fitted? if so its pretty unickable by your average scrote.

Welcome. Got any pics of your Disco?

Yes i'll upload some for you in a few days, not had the car for a week but ill take some the weekend.

Went into the garage last week with a water leak thought it was the P gasket or pump found out today the pipes had perished so a full new set has gone on for upgraded silicone hoses. Got some new pipes for the turbo hoses and the EGR blanking kit that need fitting. Engine bay needs cleaning got 6 ltres of degreaser think that should do the trick. I'll get some before and after pics.

Got some new pannels for rear boot to weld in and waterproof the rear of the car and found a hole on the seatbelt mount while taking up the carpet.

Parts fitted so far
New alternator + Battery ( Old alternator cooked the previous battery @16.2 v)
Fluids changed - Engine, Diff, Transmission, Swivel joint grease (Need seal replacing) - Power Steering oil needs changing and a new pipe fitting.
Brakes front and rear pads and booster cleaned and fluid changed will flush in a few month's
Coolant pipes and thermostat changed with O ring and seal.
Wadding kit

Parts to be fitted
Snorkle
Oil catch can
EGR blanking kit and Turbo hoses
Glow plug leads and new plugs
Rear boot pannels and Seatbelt mount weld repair for MOT
Swivel joint leak might just rebuild both sides.
Bumper and need to decide on a Winch.
Split charging kit and second battery.

Think i need to start a build thread, got lots of jobs on this car from interior out and adding wiring for Radio kit and a few other upgrades and it might be useful for other people.

Thanks,

Ben

Yes its has at the moment. I was debating removing it as understood there was more scope for tunning.

Plug in chip transforms the edc engine, way above what you can get with a manual injection pump.
Only reason to change to a non edc pump is if the edc inj pump fails and cost of repair is to much, they are pretty reliable pumps though.
Like I said above they are better security wise.

Thanks for the clarification, any recomendations on chips and where they sell them? It's a bit slower than im used to so any power gains are a bonus. Looking at turbo and intercooler upgrade for it in 6 months once i can get the basics sorted and run it around for a while to get the quirks out of it.

Any on ebay?
Years ago I had a 97 300 edc auto slow as fcuk almost beyond belief, plug chip and it was quicker than the td5 manual that replaced it 50k later.
Only one listed on ebay specifically for the 300 edc engine, https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/23340250...UMwrVjld7IjzxVOM3H4CyUWOA5|tkp:Bk9SR7Cgz4TcYQ

Thanks will take a read, any power i can get all the better. I might buy the chip and just see it can't get any slower.

At the time I called the throttle pedal the on/pff switch, as there was simply nothing between idle and max throttle!

Sorry for the delay in the update.

The throttle issue we got to the bottom off of the engine management light, TPS was changed just to be sure even though the original was working. While driving if you lift of the peddle the light goes out. Managed to get a garage to scan the car and its come up as injector number 4. I've not found a company selling the injectors for the EDC as they are no longer available so i will probably send them off for rebuild.

Not sure if anyone had an view on rebuilt injectors?

Got to the bottom of the cooant leaking issue after most of the pipes were upgraded. Leak was a crack to the casing of the water pump housing, it was first thought P gasket and water pump and coolant hoses. Only problem it was found after the cambelt water pump had all been replaced so it had to come off again.

The car is a japanese import Discovery 1 300tdi edc version the main coolant hose that connects next to the alternator is too short with part number : ESR3296 if it was 2-3 inches longer it would be ok. I have two extra pipes and they are both the same. It needs replacing soon as all the others are now new upgraded with silicone.

Has anyone come across the coolant pipe being too short with the japanese import model or any idea on a part number for it?

I was talking my plans through with the garage and it was suggested an ali sport intercooler might be a good upgrade to start with when the injector is fixed but the tunning chip i will get one after payday as it can't hurt and when the injector is fixed we can give it a good test.

Next is the power cables to the rear with charging from a Dc to Dc charger and adding a dual battery in the engine bay for lights. Ive got an event i need the car in two weeks so got a short deadline.

The seatbelt mounts are suspect and going to cut it and replace with new pannel but not sure if butt welding is the way to go with it or plate under it with seam welding the outer edge and in the middle spot welding to give maximum strength. I'll upload and give you a better idea.

Not sure if anyone has done a seatbelt mount? I've had people suggest rivit's but removing previous bodges on the car and found a great one with RTV in the rear door frame that's going to be an pain to weld and both swivel joints are leaking so that will be addressed in a few months.

Thanks,

Ben
