Landrovers, I hate them, but I love them just as much!

I bought a Discovery on Friday, approx 40 miles from my home. Set off at 3:30 to collect it and should have been back by 6pm at the latest. At 7:30 I was in in motorway services stood talking to the king bloke from the AA. The woodruff key hand broke, sent the crank pully out of line and snapped the fan belt. This made me have to cancel all my friday plans.
That is all sorted now and now have a fully working landrover! ish

I have noticed today though a couple of annoying little problems, as you would expect.

1) it is very very sluggish below 2500rpm but if I keep the revs up it goes ok. I'm thinking/hoping its just the lift pump not doing it stuff or am I just being a tad too hopeful?
2) passenger door electric window needs assistance to wind up, and that has to be done in stages. Is that likely to be the motor?
3) Grinding noise from the rear, I am canceling the diff out because going round right hand bends it stops, this makes me think it's a bearing. The rear brake discs are very rusty (looks like it has been stood for a while) so could it be that?

Thats it for now, until I take it out again and somthing else brakes on it!! :blabla:

What year and model?

Any car is going to be an unknown quantity, until you've checked over it thoroughly and/or gotten used to it. Even new cars have teething issues and break down, after all.....

Wouldn't have thought the window winder problem is the motor - check the slides the window moves in are clean and lubricate them with a bit of vaseline.

If that doesn't help, take the door card off and lubricate the winder mechanism with grease.

1- dunno:confused:
2- silicone spray in the window channels:D
3- to clean your rear brakes find a long empty piece of road, get some speed up and then slam on, do it a couple of times and it will clear all the rust off. it does sound like a wheel bearing, might want to check it before it welds itself to your stub axle:rolleyes:

its a 1991, 200tdi. I know all cars have there ups and downs and most problems can be fixed, just as well I have a compete donor 200tdi (with no engine) to strip parts from if needed.

1) somebody must have an idea ?
2) I will try the grease/silicone ideas but its not too much of a problem
3) If I get time tomorrow I will check the bearings before I put the brakes to any sort of strain

The main thing I want to sort is the lack of power at low revs, its a bit embarrassing when turning into a junction in second gear, then having to change to 1st to accelerate away from it

give it a good service, strip and clean the sedimentor (or remove it and join the pipes up instead. blank the egr valve. remove the intercooler and wash it through with acetone or petrol. if you search on here you will find instructions on how to do all these procedures and they should give you a bit more power.

Could be poorly performing injectors, down on compression or the fuel pump needing adjustment.
