Hi.

After years of messing about with cars, more recently classic mini's, I've made my first 4x4 purchase; a 1990 Defender 90.
It's mostly for towing and lugging stuff around, so a general workhorse rather than a concours queen!

only had it a week; started doing a few jobs like oil and filters, replaced weak battery, but lots still to do before it's ready for a good run out (like gearbox/diff oils, rocker gasket).

it's also got bigger tyres on the rears, which surely can't be doing the diff's any good? .. so I'll get those sorted too (and I see you just love people asking about tyre sizes :) )

Welcome to lz, Mike! :) Any pics of yer motor?

Unmatched tyres arent good, but probably wont do much harm for a bit if you dont lock the centre diff.

It would be best to get a matched set asap, 7.50R16s were standard for that vehicle.

thanks Turboman. Pic added to my profile.
quite fancy the idea of white modular steels so can sort out tyres then, once I have checked those wheels will fit.

ok; so my shortlived joy of defender ownership was crushed at about 4AM last Friday morning, as I awoke to the sound of some ****** starting the defender (well, trying to aimlessly).
not good.
he soon ran off, but all credit to the police who were there in minutes with a dog.
Just can't help but think it will happen again, albeit if it won't start they will tow it away.

Gutted, unfortunately now you are in a club now with one of the most sorted vehicles in the country (for thief's) . splash out on defence like a shot gun or a Gatling gun or a mine field would be useful

thanks both; the dog slept through it!

I'd rather not divulge security fitted, but it won't start as is; just vulnerable to being towed I guess.

I've read through the security thread and am considering options to stop it being dragged away.

Skytag gets my vote every time, I know people bleat on about trackers but it got mine back....I keep reading about stolen ones in the robbed section and I can't understand people who buy a Defender and do nothing about its security but ooh look a shiny winch and the obligatory 'one life, life it sticker' are high on the list of purchases

So attempted theft 2 last Thursday morning. All captured on cctv.

Once again he couldn't get it to start and to be honest I doubt he ever will, but probably won't stop him coming back next week for another go.

On a positive note, I didn't get woken up this time.

Look at defenderdefender's trackers. The actual tracker was really reasonable and affordable and their monthly payment is cheaper than skytag and yet does whats needed without having to pay extras like you do with skytag.
Really easy to fit too....weve got two now for both our vehicles.....and the reduction in insurance premium goes a tiny way to offset the cost .

Mine has a discloc too but so much more at ease since we fitted the trackers.

I only pay £7 a month for skytag and that's it, also it is £114 from Paddocks versus £205 and £10 a month??
