FWIW:
We had a single 'tapping' from our brand new short engine on startup, but we had it before we stripped it down, and put it down to a sticky hydraulic valve lifter. We re-used the lifters and camshaft, making sure that all parts were refitted to match cam to lifter.
200 miles on and using Rotella 10W-40 Fully Synthetic oil, the noise is dying away and almost gone.
I haven't heard a liner tap, so have no idea of the volume etc., but the tapping we had was easily audible away from the engine bay, and started once the engine warmed up a bit.
As has been mentioned, road noise and other noises can cover a multitude of sins!
It has covered 200 miles since start-up.
