Hi All.
Happy new year.
Would really appreciate some advice please.
I'm in the middle of rebuilding my 61 series 2 on a Richards chassis.
The bulkhead is a bit rough. Two legs, both footwells and top rail rusted. Pretty much decided on replacing but not sure where to go.
Shielder (t-tech) look good but feedback is not great. Although it appears to be from a while ago
Robert Owen. Look good but don't galvanise and long wait time.
Ultrabulkheads, just starting to make them from end Jan.
Does anyone have recent experience good or bad buying a new bulkhead in the UK Would really like to hear your thoughts.
Thanks
Sean

Reputation seemed reasonable last summer, but the husband - Paul- died in early October - and as he was the fabricator things do not look good at the moment.
At least for now : Avoid!!
:(

Lifted from the Series One Club Forum....

“Paul Halley who ran Pegasus Parts with his wife Debbie, died suddenly late last year. It was a total shock to all and completely unexpected, so has thrown things into even more turmoil. Debbie is picking up the pieces and from what I understand, she is planning on stopping the parts business and focusing on the bulkhead business. This will take time I suspect to get back on line.
They have poor reputation for communications and several people have had to reclaim their money back because of time delays and other factors, but the quality of what does come out has been to date top class.
If anybody is having problems dealing with Pegasus, I would strongly advocate giving Debbie an call and discussing matters with her directly. With a young family and having just lost her husband, she has a lot to deal with at the present. If you can't get hold of her by phone, send her an email and keep trying!
I met Paul a few years ago while discussing using my 2A LWT bulkhead as a production template and spoke to Debbie at length a few weeks ago when she told me the news. If I have one failing, its seeing the best in everyone, but I don't believe that Paul or Debbie were deliberately underhand. I think they just took on more than they could cope with and couldn't meet demand. They just got swamped and like anybody who gets swamped the natural reaction is just to clam up. Doesn't help, but I think that's what's been happening.”

I had never heard of them, but that is sad.

RIP Paul!

This is very sad news and I hope they can turn it around and make it into a good reliable business again.

You need to ask for real lead times. I waited extra weeks & it was not the same as the photos sent before it was galvanised
(I had modifications made to my bulkhead)

I've recently had a Shielder bulkhead from Terrian Tech and wouldn't really recommend.

Lots of mounting holes in the wrong place, only by a few mm but enough that things don't fit. They would be better off providing no holes at all.

Windscreen hinge brackets were a particular problem as there wasn't enough metal to tap as the hole dia. Was too wide.

Perhaps I was expecting too much, I imagine most bulkheads will require a level of fettling to fit and line up correctly but for the money I don't think it's wrong to expect more.

Thanks WoodyO

That's pretty much what I've read re shielder. Some of the comments suggested the quality issues might be behind them but clearly not.

I had never heard of them, but that is sad.

RIP Paul!

They were the ones for every specific model of bulkhead of which there were several, many with lots of detail differences, and for the perfectionist the details mattered.
Pretty sure they had a bad rep from some years back
Hope she can make a go of it, as Iirc they had all the blueprints etc

Yes. I have a bit of sympathy for the bulkhead makers. There are a lot of different kinds, and bulkheads are a structure made of thinnish steel, which do tend to go out of shape when they are being welded and galvanised. And the vehicles that they are fitted to probably aren't exactly the same shape as when they were made.

My friend repaired his own bulkhead on a Series 109". He was a very good fabricator, and he fitted reinforcing stays to stiffen it during galvanising.
When it came back, and the stays were removed, we still had to use clamps and big bolts to force it into position on the chassis. Once it was all bolted up it was fine.

I can recommend classic bulkheads but not recently, and they are refurbished rather than new. They refurbished and galvanised my series three bulkhead about 5 years ago. They also do the process properly with a full acid dip to remove paint/rust from both inside and outside rather than just shot blasting the outside. As with everything relating to bulkheads the lead time is a long time, it took nearly 12 months for my series one and on enquiring recently about doing a defender one it was over 12 months lead time.

Thanks for the responses.
I considered repairing mine but the damage is beyond my meagre skills and with everything on show that wasn't an option.
I had repair estimates from specialists. Moss-side and Welding wood. The costs were as you'd expect pretty high - getting close to the replacement costs
So you end up with replacement and it came down to shielder (galvanised, good value, quick, possibly a bit rough- based on internet feedback not my personal experience) or Robert Owen ( not galvanised, more expensive, 5 months wait but a quality part - based again on internet feedback not personal experience).
Decision is made and Ive got 5 months to tidy the garage in readiness.
Thanks again for all the advice.

You will not regret that decision.
