Evening all!
Just picked up my first landy yesterday and she needs new rubber. I'm 99% sold on Pirelli's Scorpion ATR in 225/75-16 but wanted to make sure they wouldn't bugger anything up. What with being a tad wider and more than a tad taller.
Your thoughts?

I think you need to

a. introduce yourself
b. tell us what landy you drive
c. tell us what you intend to drive on roads/offroad/extreme
d. does it have any mods ?

+1

Its gotta be a freelander, don't think those tyres would be much taller than standard on anything else.

Ah yes, where are my manners!?
I'm Craig, I am the proud owner of a bang-tidy, 2002, TD4 flavoured Freelander!
She's covered a mere 118k and is booked in for a major service and a few tweaks in a weeks time.
She'll be carrying me along byways, highways and the odd gree-lane. When I'm out shooting, she'll be expected to perform on mud, gravel, snow, grass and sheep schmidt.
At present she's wearing a tired set of mix'n'match 225/55-16s.

I think having mixed tyres on those can cause issues.
Pirellis are usually good tyres on anything, I would go with standard size myself, don't know what it is though.
One of the freebie boys will be along in a bit and tell you, but guessing that is pretty much what they will say.

Danger, Will Robinson :)

Mix and Match tyres will blow up your IRD (think transfer gearbox, but not!) pretty quickly so keep the miles off it until you've got new boots.

I can't comment on the tyre sizes off the top of my head, but welcome to the forum, have a search around and look up the "one wheel up" test for freelanders - it's the first thing you should do as a new owner!
Freelanders are pretty competent beasts once you've checked out the usual trouble spots on them!

At the top right of the screen is a search box, enter '225/75' make sure its this forum only and click search - lots of good people from history will tell you all you need to know about (not) fitting those tyres to a Freelander.

As stated, mix-n-match tyres on a Freelander is the biggests absolute no-no for Freelander ownership, 2nd to running with no oil in the engine. If you do not know how the Freelander transmission works (thinking you know is not good enough) - have a look through the FAQ section to understand how good tyres, VCU and IRD work together to provide great traction - but if the tyres aren't perfectly matched, or the VCU goes tight, it will destroy your transmission quite quickly.

Have you checked underneath to make sure it has props running front to back with the VCU in the middle (lots of people whip them off if they've knackered things with mixed tyres). That's not a definitive test that the transmission is connected as people also convert to 2WD by removing gears in the IRD to hide transmission problems.

Read up on the "1 wheel up test" on here and do the test - it will tell you if the transmission is all hooked up correctly and whether you need to replace the VCU to protect your transmission.

Anyone buying a Freelander should really budget for a recon VCU as they are usually not replaced on time by owners.

So, you propose to increase the rolling radius by fitting the tyres you quote - which will make the overall gear ratio higher, which will make off road driving far more difficult - which will screw up the whole basis of the ideology of the freelander as an off road 'capable' vehicle

Yeah, go for it

Or, read a heck of a lot on this forum and understand the Freelander transmission in all it's glory...................

The current 225/55/16 are incorrect for starters. The correct factory 16" tyre was 215/65/16. This gives you a standard diameter of 27".
Your proposed 225/75/16 have a diameter of 29.3'' so should fit, just. However they won't give much flex room when cornering.
I have 225/60/17 on my Freelander. These fit fine but are only marginally larger than standard at 27.7". They don't flex much because of the 60% ratio.

I had these on my Discovery 3. Awesome tyres on that. I'd have them on my Freelander, if they came in a suitable size.

It was heart breaking to have to sell the Discovery, knowing that I'd only put 5K miles on those beautiful boots. The next owner won't need to change them for a while.

Thanks for the advice chaps! I'll stick to 225/65s i think. That 'one wheel up thing looks like fun! Might have a go at that this afternoon if i can find a level piece of tarmac.
Thanks again.
Craig.

I had Scorpions on my Discovery. I "never" get punctures, but in the 2 years I ran Scorpions I got 2 punctures - don't know if it was the tyres or just bad luck, but if it was just luck, then 1 is bad luck, 2 is very very unlikely bad luck. When they retained air though, they were good tyres!
