Plain and simple. Rust. It is the main killer of Disco's. Check everywhere. Especially parts that you don't usually see. Under the carpets, under the boot mat, inner wings etc.

Rear cross member and sills rust too. Then there's leaky sunroofs...

Check the steering box for leaking power steering fluid, that's an MOT fail and a pig to swap. Gearboxes can be crunchy.

See if you can find out if it's had a recent cam belt swap.

If you 've got someone local to you who knows the ins and outs of Disco's take them with you.

Get a Jap import no rust then just check mechanics if it is a recent import chances are it'll be good all round "nobodys going to ship a disco from japan with any serious faults " you'll not believe the difference in condition mine still looks like new underneath.

Allright Robin? :)
There's a guy on fleabag who sells 'Rust Free' Jap import Discos and asks £4000+ for them.
It's still a 1997/1998 Disco 1 at the end of the day.
Rust free Jap import or not, it's still only a £2000 - £2500 Disco 1.
From my experience in the trade, 'Imported' on the V5 document meant 'knock another £500+ off the price'.
Cars from an export country which are reimported to the UK can have different model names/spec/emissions control which mean insurance companies have trouble underwriting them sometimes.

I've just bought another '98 Disco TDi300 last week. Not mint but perfectly usuable, good floor, sills etc so no great rust issues, has 7 months tax on it (which I cashed-in at Dover just before getting on the boat!!) but the price.................................................... £1230 !!!!!

Drove it 1000 miles last week without a murmur, just great !!

Disco's can and should be as "cheap as chips" now.

Cheers and good hunting
Dave

oh - i dunno. - it looked pretty impressive as a smoke screen the other day - maybe its a frigate?

You should have seen the size of the crack in the downpipe flange that got welded up yesterday

All that cold water last week made a small crack VERY big.

Goes better now - no more air being drawn through the crack and messing up the Lamda sensor signals to the ECU.

Just need a clutch now................. :ballchain:
