Are yu saying that rotating wheels will pull it into the ditch, but sliding wheels wont?

Correct.

If you pull the vehicle backwards at an angle of 45 degs and with the steering on full lock towards the ditch the vehicle will come out sideways.

If you're driving to fast into a 90 degree bend and lock your front wheels up while turning full left or right you will still travel in a straigh line. The same logic applies when winching or towing. The vehicle will try and take the shortest route towards the winch/tow point.

bet you can't spell it.:D:D:D

have you tried to rip the V shaped towing eye out the back of a vauxhall?

Yup and succeeded.

I have done recovery for the last 5 or so years and have had my fair share of towing eyes snapping and cars rolling away. Hence I never use them unless I have to and when I do I will always use a safety line just on the offchance.

I've seen loads of screw in towing eyes sheer, I've seen loads of peugeot' ford, BMW etc welded towing eyes sheer. I've yet to see the floor get ripped out of a vauxhall that is being pulled by the welded triangular towing eye on the rear.

How would you recover a bmw or audi TT etc in the same situation as the vehicle in the piccy?

Winch to snatchblock back to chassis, soft bridle to steering arms close to inner mounts to snatchblock and safety line to snatch block from towing eye.

Safe enough incase something goes wrong and an equal pull from 3 points. Cant use wire strop on high end stuff as they tend to bend!

you wouldn't be able to get to both the arms.;)

as you dont know what your doing you you did right by leaving well alone, however why aint you out there getting stuck and being recovered and recovering other people? you have a land rover ffs

Cos I've only had it 3 weeks and i haven't had a chance yet! Don't worry it will be going off road!

thats good, i was worried there

No need too! When I got it it was bog standard, so far I've put grabber at's on and extended breathers. Prob fine for some easy lanes. Intend on changing bumpers and adding protection + snorkal. Once all mods are done it will be getting plenty grief!

have to agree with ratty on this one as same way was taught to recovery from same situations ( took a IVR course most probaly same as ratty ??) and agree that having pulled many gm / vauhalls have never had a rear towing point break or even bend as yet and been in recovery trade for over 15 years

Why not? If its laying in the ditch on its ns wheels then there most likely will be access to the ns arm, os is easy to get to. Failing that dig an access point to get to it.

Assuming that you did get to both arms, how would you manage to get an equal pull to the centre of both arms using a winch brother when the vehicle is offset from the road?
