I'm selling my TD4, 3 door full service history, not sure where you are but I'm in East Sussex.

If your buying any Freelander with 160,000km you will see some big bills soon. Petrol 1.8K just adds a couple more. Make sure you have at least £500 set aside for servicing and repairs and you won't be to far away.

Every engine and car you buy has a risk of developing faults - be they major or small. Lets face it they will all develop faults over time. The 1.8 undoubtedly has a high risk of developing major faults relating to overheating, head gasket and head failure. Some people run their 1.8's for years and never have any problems, but most will suffer these problems, some repeatedly. The 2.5 V6 is exactly the same and is double the trouble when it occurs.
The risk with diesels is far less. They are generally good strong engines. As said though the TD4 can be crippled by electrical (sensor) problems that can be very difficult to diagnose even though it should be very simple - and if (when) injectors go they are very expensive to replace. The L Series has an almost indestructible image - but tell that to the guy's who have had drive (fan) belts go that wrap themselves around the cam belt and destroy the engine completely.
So which ever engine you choose is a risk - but definitely if you put petrol in the filler - its a much higher risk.
Personally, I love my L Series
It pulls like a train and all I've done in 4 years of ownership is change oil, filters and belts - super motor. I've just done a big road trip around the South Island here in NZ with 5 adults and baggage on board, lots of it over mountains, lots of it in high temps with the AC on and the car didn't give any problems what so ever. Did 2,818 kms using 211 liters of fuel so averaged 7.5 l/100kms or 38mpg. Pretty damn good. They're generally cheaper than TD4s but finished production in 2000 so are missing some of the bells and whistles of later model cars.

Thank you nice people for trying to helping me!
Today i saw the car . Very good painting,inside clean,the leather little use....
The owner showed me the papers , is bought from germany in 2013,from then showed me the gpl control,supplies changes and from last mounth the revision . In revision say : exhaust pipe need to be change (maybe hoarse) and this:
for the front (left and right)- i don`t know how is named in english. Do you think that is all?
If the hood is opened from the right part of the car,that mean the steering wheel is original right steering wheel? (the car now is left handed)
The smoke was whitish.
The price is around 3000€

If you are mainly concerned with "Very good painting,inside clean,the leather little use...." then I hope you have deep pockets - those things are insignificant when buying any car.

Best advice if your not sure is get a second opinion from someone who knows what they're talking about. Over here the AA will do it for a fee.

3000 euros seems very expensive for a 2003 1.8 Freelander with 170,000Km on the clock
I don't think I would pay half of that here in the uk, (knowing what could happen with hg) If you really want it - get a professional inspection before you buy..

After suffering 4 years ownership of a overheating Disco V8 and the money pit that was - I jumped ship and bought a Japanese truck (Mazda Proceed). Thought I'd do it right this time and got an AA inspection. Fine they said - good truck. So parted with my hard earned and bought it. Within a month the engine was iron filings and it was sold for scrap. Went back to the overheating Disco for another 4 years!
So I'd recommend that an AA inspection ain't worth diddly. I definitely will never get another one.
