Hi i have recently brought a 1992 defender 200tdi.
It started fine for a few weeks then i went on a trip up to scotland and and after about 2 - 3 hours driving got off at a service station.
When i came back to start it after about 15 min it would not start you could hear it clicking and the fan would stop blowing and the transmission oil temp light come on.
so i got the manual out and it said it can come on when diving continuously at high speeds for a long time. but it did not come on while driving only when the key is turned to start engine.
After leaving if for about 30 - 45 min it started but ever since then after driving for even a little way it will not start up.
so now i have to turn the key upto and over 10 times.
i have change all the oil and it still does it.
Please help as i am really lost.

where is the earth strap so i can have a look. i will have a feel and see if the starter motor is hot. is it a big job to replace starter

earth strap will be somewhere near the battery box underneath from engine gearbox to chassis, will be a braided strap, also look at wires on battery and on starter motor , to replace starter motor is normally only a couple of bolts so depends how " Handy "you are

the earth strap in the and is tight. i just managed to get my hand to the motor it is warm not too hot.
so im guess im going to have to take the starter out next weekend and have a look

Have a check that all cabling on the battery is good.

How many earthing straps in engine bay? Should be one from engine to chassis and another from starter to chassis.

yeah it looks like all the earth straps are there.
i was reading the fourm and found somewhere that said after the went wading and off road they got dirty water inside it and i need a clean so i might take it off and have a look

mine was doing the same since i got stuck in muddy water, it done it for a couple of weeks and sorted itself out... it has not done it for a couple of months

Thanks for all the replys.
I was trying to start it tonight and had the fuse cover off. When I turned the key I could see a spark inside the yellow relay on the far left is that normal or do I need a new relay if it's normal I will have to take the starter out and give it a clean.

Not sure about relay sparking but it sounds like the starter solenoid could be on its way out. Not too awkward to change.

Just need to phone around suppliers. Probably better sticking a new one in. You can also test if it is the solenoid by using a jumper wire to power the starter direct.

Cheers

Does anyone know what the part number a starter solenoid is for a 1992 200tdi defender 90 is and what's the best place to get one. I live in the Northamptonshire / Buckinghamshirearea and help would be great thanks
When I got the starter motor out at the weekend the motor said it was a Lucas but I forgot to write down any off the numbers

It could also be that the exciter wire is loose, thin wire to the starter. I also had a similar problem, not distance related, but would start one morning, drive two miles up the road, leave for half an hour then it would take several attempts to start, it turned out to be the ignition barrel. At the back in the dash where the wires attach, the exciter wire had worked loose inside, twenty quid for a new one, two small grub screws removed, it slid out, new one was quite tight to fit, but she fired up ok.
You can jump start direct from the battery if you get stuck.
Hope this helps

Rick

Will have a quick look at the Bosch starter in the garage later, and see what numbers/letters there are, it too is from a 200tdi.

It's is definitely the solenoid that has gone q have checked everything else. How do you jump start it. At the moment stuck in my works carpark.

If you're still stuck just run a cable from the battery to the terminal on the back of the starter motor and then turn the key as normal. Hopefully that should fire it up
