Need for more speed

My V8 runs thru the standard Series III fayre & is used every day, on the motorway on a 45/50 mile round trip to work. It's ok now, but I envisage once the overdrive is fitted & used to decrease injun speed rather than increase road speed it'll purr along even more nicely.

I find it really well behaved on and off road & it hasn't let me down yet!

It's difficult not to thump thru the gears in anger once it a while, just cuz it's so much fun (really must measure my 0-60 time!), but I generally take it pretty easy.

I reckon the standard III drive train is stronger than people give them credit for, with a little care and regular oil checks and changes I reckon it does the job.

i agree with marcus, but in saying that the 2a gearbox has always been known for being stronger, anyway, if yer aint fittin this old v8 what yer doin with it

My petrol SII had a daihatsu 2.8 n/a diesel put in before i got it with a sIII box, it is smooth as anything and with another car behind it seemed to cruse at 80, thats what the guy behind said we wer doing and that was easy.

Had a sIII petrol before but would not consider another petrol now. I think the izuzu diesel is also a very good conversion.

I get 30ish mpg, and with half that free chip fat from the local pub, i am getting 60mpg for my £. Another good reason to go diesel.

I did drive a SIII wi the overdrive, its better, but on the M4 its still not enough, and as nice/smooth a motor as the LRO petrol is, its thirsty and a bit slow, you can improve it,but not fix it. Just my view

More speed??? Less noise??? It's a Landy, what do you expect!

Overdrive is worth having, but they are a bit fragile, so try to get one that hasn't clocked up too many miles.

haha, yeah im not expecting silent running at 70mph or anything!

does anyone have experience with rocky mountain "roverdrives", they're write up looks really good.

I have a Roverdrive, I've had if for a few years now I was one of the first in the country. They are quieter and have a common oil supply with the main box. Generally they are very good. I have had issues with mine,but I don't know how much is down to the Indian sourced parts in my recon gearbox...

The problem I get is the OD can kick out of engagement into neutral when either in OD engaged, or disengaged, It generally happens when I kick a lot of power through. I've fashioned a lock for the lever in the cab, to stop this as it got to the point every time I took of from the lights it kicked out of gear or I had to hold it. I also had issues with it kicking out on the over-run, nastily when I was off-road on an alpine pass... I found the colour of adrenalin! This is the second one I have had, the first was a very early model and they replaced it when it started kicking out on the over run too, initially (18 months) it was perfect.

The problem may have it's root in excessive mainshaft travel in my main gearbox, so I'm hesitant to blame Rocky Mountain entirely. Although I have not managed to check the gearbox to see if it is at fault... I would criticise Rocky for relying on a detent ball bearing to prevent this... In the land of Landies, that is a bit of a woossie method to hold together pretty brutal machines...

Generally a very good box though and in current manufacture. Take of leave my comments, it would be nice to hear from some other folk to confirm my theories to be honest!
