Name this hole in my engine sump...

Hello,

My girlfriends freelander 1 is leaking oil, I took the skid pan off and can see the leak, but it's coming from a hole (I think) I've taken a photo which will explain better...

It looks like there used to be something in that hole as it has circular markings around the hole, there is also a bolt next to it that's covered in oil. This seems to sometimes drip on to the downpipe and smokes like a bitch when you start the engine. I initially thought it was gearbox sump plug but found that near the back of the gearbox. This hole is part of the engine sump I believe

Any help?

Not sure what the hole is, don't remember seeing it on mine but I did find a couple of the sump bolts were loose and let oil seep out, might be worthwhile torquing them up. If that hole went into the sump your engine would be dead by now.

There are no indigenous mammals or rodents in NZ (I don't think) - which is why birds got lazy and decided not to fly. The Maori bought rats with them 900 years ago which started the decimation on NZ's birds and reptiles. The Europeans, well the British, did a much 'better' job when they brought over stoats and weasels. I'm not sure if Kaymites could be considered the equivalent of moles, but if they did ever exist, they would probably be extinct by now.

BTW - don't know if you follow the 'Coast' series, but the fella's just done a series on NZ - should be worth a watch.
 
Seen an episode of the Australian series and thought it was pretty good but don't watch much TV so probably won't see it. Too busy fixing Freelanders and my MGF.

Edit: Have we got a wee bit orf topic 'ere? :p
 
That hole is for a sump bolt which seems to be missing. It is a 10mm head. The sump needed sealant applied to the mating face prior to fitting. Yo may be best to drop the sump, reseal it and replace that missing bolt. Are those casting lines I see or cracks?

Only pre-european /maori mammal was the bat which there are two varieties - short tailed and long tailed. Yes that Coast series was exceptional to watch. Those sealers did it tough!
 
Thanks for the replies so far, I serviced the car in the winter and changed the engine oil, the sump nut for that was on the other side of the sump at the front, so would this hole be another engine sump nut hole? I've never seen a car with 2?

Initially I contacted land rover and they advised that there is no nut there and sold me a gearbox sump nut which was too small for the hole in question so I'm a bit confused.
I will torque the rest of the nuts up but I think until that hole is plugged it's not going to stop leaking oil.

Any more info greatly appreciated

It could be a replacement engine out of another Rover vehicle. I suspect it's from a Rover 75 which has a different sump from the Freelander iirc.

I wouldn't worry too much, oil leaks in K series are common but I doubt yours is leaking from that hole. Check the cam shaft seals and cam carrier and check the sump bolts are tightened.
