Name that noise...

Hi all, I'm new to the forum so sorry if I break any rules...

My 2004 Discovery has developed a new noise coming from the gearbox (R380) (or maybe clutch?) - it stops when I put the clutch in, meaning it's after the engine, and it's there when stationary and the transfer box is in neutral, meaning it's before the transfer box (at least that's my logical conclusion). It sounds like a slow chugging (best way I can think to describe it) - almost like a steam train (no joke). I've linked to a youtube video of the noise below (ignore the stock video...), the noise is clearer in the second half of the video.



Any help or ideas would be very much appreciated.

id check oil for amount and any debris

Hell it could be anything; input shaft bearings, spigot bush, idler gears in gearbox ++
If its developed and you haven't just put a new clutch in then it is more than likely gearbox, but whether its of any real concern is anyones guess.
Jamesmartin suggestion is probably a good starting point.

Thanks both. Just replaced gearbox oil and no change. Not realy any debris in the waste oil, just a teaspoon or so of silty metal powder stuck to drain plug magnet.

I also sent the audio recording to Dave Ashcroft of Ashcroft Transmissions and he recons either a pinion bearing or layshaft bearing. Whatever it is it isn't a fun 1 man job!

That sounds like the noise my wifes Corsa makes, local garage reckon it's the dual mass flywheel.

Not a necessary job either. It could sing like that for years, its just whether you can put up with it or not.
