I was looking at the engine number on my Series 2a rebuild project earlier and figured I'd look it up out of curiosity..... It's had a later Series 3 diesel engine fitted at some stage.
Engine number begins 369*****

Consult all my data sources, no such number seems to exist......
Plumb the number into the Gargler machine and get one hit - this thread on LRUK https://www.lrukforums.com/threads/odd-lr-88-engine-number.232928/ that suggests the number may have been mis-stamped. There's no way the number on mine and his have coincidentally been mis-stamped.... mine's come out of the factory wearing this 369 number. It's a 5MB ribbed block, with traces of red paint on it, so it stacks up as a late, possibly metric, block. But what was it originally fitted to? Was the 369 engine a LR Factory new engine?

Anyone got any ideas on origin?

Ask on the s2 forum
It's not a Series 2 engine.... it's IN a Series 2 vehicle, but it's a later engine (possibly a late Series 3?) that's been fitted at some point in history. I'll ask over there anyway to see if anyone has any ideas, but it's more a wider question to the Land Rover cognoscenti to see if anyone has come across an engine number in the 369 series or can shed any light on it.

I dont know about the rover factory but there was a time at the Austin factory in Longbridge where some engines went missing before their numbers had been stamped on. Mostly mini engines but I think also Allegro engines and later Meastro engines

Yes but the s2 club guys know their onions, and if it has been done before then they might have heard/seen/have one.
There are/were lots of s3 on the s2 forum, mainly as I think there was not a dedicated s3 forum?

Doesn't exist, according to Glencoyne.
He is usually right about this stuff, are you sure you are reading the engine number right? Most are hard to read after 40+ years.

They were spot on on my V8 in my 101 LHD GS 24v...
But S2 I am working on lots of notes from client re work done...2ltr diesel with 2.25 head...no engine number in normal place below exhaust manifold but this stamped above lift pump on block...ZO-57=88DSVAF any ideas?...

At a guess, a Portuguese engine rebuilder has got happy with the hand stamps and a hammer.

The other thing in that area would be Santander. No idea what engine numbers they used.

It's a RHD 59 original UK reg 1513 DT but I think it's spent time in Africa and the Canaries...

Here we go - got some pictures of the engine today.....

Engine number....

And this is what is cast into the RH side of the block...

These are the casting marks on the LH side of the engine

That looks like a late 2286cc diesel to me.

Guessing the bloke who was stamping the numbers on that Friday afternoon after the pub held the 6 stamp the wrong way up when he whacked it with the hammer.

I would treat it as a 366 prefix, see how you go.

I thought the oil filler pipe mounted on side of block was on more earlier engines, it’s not on my 84.
The engine number 00813 is very low too, my 84 is over 24200 so perhaps it’s an early 366 wrongly stamped or from outside uk, do the other markings on the block look like casting dates

answered my own question ( info from other site)

Four cylinder engines built from 1970 can be fairly accurately dated by reference to the date cast into the side of the block between a couple of core plugs on the manifold side of the block. On some lower engines it can apparently be lower down.

  • The first one or two numbers are the date in the month it was built (1 to 31)
  • The next digit will be a letter (A = Jan, B = Feb etc) The letter I is not used.
  • The last digit is the year, on a 10 year cycle (so 'I' could be 1971, 1981 or 1991.
