There is a small car park I use now and again, when I go walking in a particular area nearby. It's in a rural area, and very secluded, although usually it's reasonably busy, as it's next to an old priory remains, and is used by ramblers.

I've used the car park for the past three or four years now, and ever since I started using it, I've seen an old land rover parked there, very rusty, and slowly decaying.
I, (like most people I suppose), never payed it any attention. I did once park my old mini next to it and take a few pictures of them together, but that's about it.

Since I was last there a few months ago, I've become interested in series landys, and now finally own one. Using my new found judgement, I can say from memory, that it's either a series 2 or 2a.

I really cannot understand why anybody would park their series (with a canvas tilt and unlocked doors), in a national trust car park, and leave it to rot for years. The only possibilities I can see are that it was nicked and dumped there, and everyone passing has been too ignorant to report it to the police, or that somebody left it there because they couldn't be bothered to scrap it.

It would certainly make a tidy little project for somebody, and I have every intention of sorting this conundrum out. If it has no rightful owner to be re-united with, perhaps a good outcome would be to put it on ebay as a project and then donate the proceeds to H4H or something.

but how can you sell it if it aint yours? And cos its not your land you cant claim it.Looked into this beofre, claiming cars is actually really easy, but you need to own the land(or be an agent of the land owner) to do so.

if I really wanted, as seeing as the car has been there for so many year, it doesnt have an owner.

I would tow the car out of there to somewhere else, and then apply for the V5

yeah, claiming a car is a piece of **** think its one form and three weeks wait +38 quid for admin

I agree with JP.. if its been there 4 years.. its hardly been missed has it. :D

he would probably just get in an even more complicated situation by contacting anything legal... they would make a right mess of it with loads of paperwork and burocracy.

its just the way I said it.

been there for 4 years, no one has missed it.
tow the thing back home
apply for the V5
its his

DVLA doesnt care as long as they have someone to send the tax bill.

agree with you again JP... its nobodys at the moment they obviously dont want it otherwise it wouldnt be there. :D

Do it legally. Maybe the poor fecker is dead and the thing belongs to his/her kids...might be the only thing they owned...ask plod for advice before just taking it.

Too right.

and I bet the national trust can't wait to bill ya for the unpaid parking tickets in that carpark once ya become the owner...whats the goin rate, about 3 quid an hour?!:D

careful, dont upset the ramblers - thats what happened to the last owner, he drove past some ramblers and they made him disappear.

The poor owner parked up and went climbing, slipped and landed on a tiny ledge and has been living off grass and slugs ever since thinking 'one day someone will notice my abandoned car and call mountain rescue' and now your going to go and steal it. Bar-stewerd.

think the dvla try to contact the original ownersa when you claim a car.The one we did the fella chipped off to LA to live.

So I went there after, and this is the landy:

I tried doing a tax check on the vehicle on the taxdisc.gov website but nothing found.

The landy is unlocked and the door locks look as though they've been broken into, since theyre all bent and twisted. (Despite it being a rag top).
It looks battered and buckled but fairly solid, and I couldn't work out whether the mud on the chassis and wheels was new or years old. I would have thought that it would have been washed off with the rain, snow and frosts we've had over the past few years. I opened the doors, and inside theres a few odds and ends like gloves etc. on the dash, and then under the passenger seat there was some relatively good condition bits and bobs, jump leads etc. In the back was a homemade wooden walking stick, a spare wheel, a gallon fuel container, and some rubbish.
What's most surprising about this little beauty is that it seems to have had a brand new hood fitted in the last 6 months or so. Why anybody would do that, I have no idea... but it leads me to believe that it's still in use (for what exactly, I do not know!). Odd though, as I noticed that there was no foam left in both seat bottoms as though mice had got to them.

definately strange then, it sound like someone is still using it..

leave something on a seat and check again in a few weeks to see if its still there

Unfortunately I have nowhere to put it. I'd like to see something done with it, but I don't have the facilities to do anything with it myself.

If anybody wants to know where it is then let me know and I'll pass on the details.

Chances are it belongs to a local. Most NT carparks are leased off the local land owner. And if the NT haven't bothered with it. then the park/NT wardens will know who it belongs to.
