My turn for a gearbox rebuild

Going to do more measuring and inspecting tomorrow. Hopefully I can salvage a few more parts but I am skeptical. I would just go buy another gearbox but the cheapest used one I have found here is 300 euros and even though it is a "good gearbox" I think I would end up in the same boat. Will be scrounging ebay where I can and ordering genuine when i need them. I will keep posting findings and pictures. Cheers

i doubt youd get many genuine parts now ,its one of the reasons many have gone out of rebuilding them ,and i have to give a warning that its not so east to full guarrentee as was ,still the last few havent given any trouble ,2nd and 3rd bush is a common failure even on running boxes you rarely find one intact ,eventhough series 3s use a later 2 piece bush the 1 piece is often fitted during rebuilds ,its still worth pricing parts up,1st 2nd synchro hub would be reuseable if teeth arent pitted

Few gen parts left at Craddocks, I got my final drive gear from them and it arrived in a tatty old box in proper grease paper same as the rear bearing support, tatty old thick grease paper covered in tar with a blurred LR sticker on the join of the paper

Looking for opinions on the teeth on the input shaft. I am leaning towards reusing but am looking to see what the more experienced minds say. Thanks

its not so much the condition of dog teeth they would go again but condition on bearing surface behind them where the knackered roller bearing ran,and state of gear teeth as input main bearing had collapsed, its like running on a flatish tyre even when its reflated its never right anymore

:5biagree:
If it was mine because the hardening on the dog teeth is gone/pitted and the bearing surface looks pretty worn.
Think it it might be worth getting the s/ hand box and rebuilding that as (I hope) it wouldn't be in such a bad state. The one you have looks like virtually every thing is knackered.

A question for you:- what was the state of the rear mainshaft bearing/housing? And was the bearing housing moving in the gearbox casing?
The reason I ask is that both the boxes I did showed evidence of the bearing housing spinning so I renewed and loctited the housing. Just wondered whether they all did this and it didn't matter anyway.

I am toying with that dilema now. Down here in Spain the cheapest used gearbox I have found has been 200 euro and that is about 6 hours away. Don't know if I would come out ahead or not. Using Britcar and their shopping cart I am at about 850 pounds for everything new except bearings and gaskets. I am mailing my bearings back to my dad in the states and our local bearing shop.

As for your question about the bearing spinning, I haven't gotten that far on the case yet. Still draining all the muck and gunk out of it. I will let you know what I find when I get there though.

It might be cheaper to get a UK relative to pick up a box, dismantle it and ship over the internals ?

Or buy the new gears from here and get them shipped rather than the states or spain ?

Postage to me here in Spain from the U.S. is relatively cheap. I can still utilize the USPS and get it at a reasonable rate. No family for me in the UK. I did meet a bloke here last weekend who has a brother in the UK so might try that route.

If anybody has good internals and feels up to the task I would gladly pay for parts, postage and some extra for time. Thanks guys. Will keep posting as it comes along.

well when you are in the boon docks sometimes you bit the bullet and get it done right. Going cheap as you know 2600 pages and still not running. Would not be giving advice as you cant get **** to run

Wouldn't be taking advice from a merkin either…….

Nothing wrong with buying cheap when you don't expect much from it, I knew I was buying a non runner

So you buy a good recon box with a warranty rather than spending a stupid amount of money on ashcroft or simmonites parts……

landrover specialists simmonites gearboxes

If he's shipping anyway and lets say the box costs £500 shipping alone due to the weight is going to come up to around £200 at least just guessing off the weight and size

So he may as well call someone like this Reconditioned gearboxes by The Reconditioned gearbox company. Re-manufactured and reconditioned gearboxes

Find a gearbox recon place over there

or go any buy all the parts from somewhere like Series Transmission - Land Rover Parts, Accessories & Spares From Brookwells

GEARBOX REBUILD KIT - ALL RELEVANT BEARINGS INCLUDED (SUFF A ON) ENGINES & TRANSMISSIONS for SERIES 2, 2A & 3 | LR Centre Ltd. bearings are there just need the gears, plenty of places sell them as I was ringing up, gear costs between £20-£40 depending on where you get them but then I got a free R380……

Oh and babies not babys………if you're going to insult at least try and spell correctly

Update time:

I scored a transmission in a junk yard out of a ambulance Land Rover. This is the Santana box if my research is correct. I think this was either a new transmission or one with a super fresh rebuild. The hardware still has square corners and haven't really rusted. The inside is just as clean. The gears that I could see from having the top cover and intermediate case cover off show no wear what so ever. There were super fine brass shavings in the oil that drained out but no big chips. I was able to see the teeth on one syncro and it is brand new. The transmission mounts are new as well. The hand brake even has new brake shoes. I think I got really lucky. I have a few pictures from the outside and intermediate case but couldn't get inside without complete disassembly.
