Well im back, another problem. will try and give us as much info as possible to help (2.5 DSE auto 1996)
I have some serious overheating problems, to begin with it needed the tank topping up every week and it didnt seem to be dropping a lot.
I parked it up for two days and noticed a medium pool of water under the car, couldnt determine amount as it was on gravel, but was a fair sized water mark.
I cant see exactly where its coming from, but being under the car its dripping down and back off the sump, just in front the gearbox.
I didnt think it was that bad, so kept topping it up, today I did a 4 hour journey, steady on the motorway, (dead centre on the temp gauge in the white) but on near arrival after 4 hours it jumped to the first red line, light came on, so I stopped, and looked like coolant had dropped, pipes to radiator top were NOT hard, slowly let coolant cap off to release pressure, (I know i shouldnt, but it didnt seem to be doing it itself) it let a lot of steam out, bubbled and a lot came out of the overflow pipe down the drivers wheel.
Then topped up with fluid, and cooled straight away, back to normal position.
Set off home, checked coolant after an hour, it looked like it had dropped again, but removed the cap again and it released pressure and coolant level rose back to normal.
went for fuel 5 mins later and another medium pool of water under car. Topped up.
Sett off again. 2 hours later it got to red line again, so stopped, coolant bottle VERY hot, no steam coming from cap until I undid it, water was literally nearly boiling.
Stuck a load more water in bottle and made the last 20min leg home.
When hot sometimes the coolant level is over the mark until I take the cap off then it drain right to the bottom of the tank to empty.
Is my over heating problems due to a leaking pipe, causing insufficient water to the coolant system, meaning the small amount that is left gets boiled? (ive been told behind the engine block)?
Or is it back pressure?
Or is it a knackered thermostat?
Any help appreciated ASAP
Thanks
