I have oil (or another mysterious dark liquid) leaking out of both my rear and one of my front hubs. Ex army series 3 109.
The pattern created on the once white wheels is quite nice but I am not a fan. Is this a big / expensive job or is it one a relative novice can do?

Cheers Tim

I had this problem. There is some posts on it on here so just do a search.

Your breather can be replaced by a remote one really cheaply and it will work much better. I did this on mine by removing the breather (I just couldn't get it cleaned out so chucked it) and replacing with a small pipe grommet and 2m of plastic tubing which I fed up through the rear tub to the inside of the roof. I think I used 1/8 BSP plumbing fittings and the tubing was 8 or 10mm or something? It was about £3 all in! You can do the same on the front. But check it is 1/8 BSP as I can't remember exactly?

Double check the fluid - if it's oil it'll have the characteristic smell of hypoid. If it's kind of sticky it may well be brake fluid. Is the oil leaking from the hubcap or from within the brake drum, at the back of the hub? is it leaking from the slave cylinders? If it's still leaking after you've cleared the breathers and it's definitely oil then its a fairly easy fix. First, check the wheel bearing play - too much will allow leakage and may have destroyed the seals. If the hubcaps are leaking, replace the felt washers. If the hub oil seal is leaking, take the hub off and replace. Check the surface the seal runs on - if it's corroded or scuffed it can be replaced
