Freelanders only?

Hi again all, i am back now after being away working for the last 2 months.

yet again i am having problems with the freelander...

while away my wife took the car out with a friend and the thing managed to cut out at the near by traffic light and after a jump start it managed to cut out after 5 mins again??

I decided yesterday to check it over and after a jump start, and running for 20 mins the coolant header tank was pushed opened and i lost about a litre of coolant???

i topped it back up and left it to cool down. i am thinking if the original thermostat is still fitted, and causing problem our the radiator is blocked?? but at the moment it is not a healthy car.

any advice would be greatly appreciated, as always.

Sean

Hi Sean,

Could possibly be your thermo, maybe. When she says it cut out, did she notice any overheating? It sounds like maybe it seized after being toasted. This is especially likely if she was out with a freind and probably concentrating on the road aswell as talking. You only have so much awareness to go round I suppose.

I'd suggest pulling out your thermo and giving it the teacup test. If it turns out to be ok then my second thought would be airlocks in the coolant caused by exhaust gasses.

Thanks for the advice.

I have installed a new PRT thermostat before i went away, so i know that the thermostat is fine.

I have checked this morning to see if the old thermostat was removed, and it has.

I now flushed the radiator and topped it back up and ran in for a while, it seems to be ok...once the coolant came from the air/bleed screw i tightened it back up again.

I will take her for a spin to see if the problem has been resolved.

I have been considering to buy a EWP 80 with a controller, but as yet i would like to confirm if there is another problem that is present before i fork out the money for one.

Watch the temp gauge carefully when you do. If you see a temp spike - pull over as soon as you can are carfully loosen the upper bleed screw again. If you get lots of steam and hissing/spitting then I'm afraid this might be HGF :(.

Well I'm pretty pleased with my EWP so far - small issue to resolve with the force that coolant comes into the header tank but nothing serious. Keep us posted and I'm sure we can help you figure it out.

Mine was the same but they did a **** job and used the cheapest parts. If you end up doing it make sure you do it with the best parts and be sure to get the head skimmed too. Good luck mate :).
