Hi everyone,
This is my first post on here, so please go easy on me. I also has better make it perfectly clear that I know very little about cars and how they work apart from the obvious (fuel, oil, air in the tyres, water in the squirty etc).
Where to start? Well I purchased a Freelander 2 SE TD4 2.2 in November 2008 from a reputable dealer. It was 18 months old when I bought it. I've had 20 months of absolute trouble free driving experience until last Saturday:(.......
Whilst driving home from work and approaching a roundabout doing around 60 mph (it was on a dual carriageway!) when the there was, what I can only describe as a thud and the engine cut out. I pulled over to the hard shoulder assess and discovered oil beneath the engine. I looked under the bonnet to see what I could find (Don't know why, because I know nothing anyway:doh: Its a bloke thing I guess?).
Anyway, called green flag and got it towed back to work (home is 50 miles away and there is a Land Rover repair specialist in the next unit...Luckily).
So, had it looked at today and the mechanic says (i'll try my best to get this bit right) that one or possibly more of the pistons came loose and somehow smashed their way into the engine:eek:! He says the engine is now destined for the skip and that I have to replace it. It's out of warranty now so I can't see any point in approaching Land Rover themselves. My questions is, has anybody experienced anything like this.
I'd love to hear your experiences in getting it rectified. Also, does anyone have any idea how much an engine will cost to replace with all the labour etc.
Thanks for reading
Phil

Thats going to cost - hopefully you can source a good used engine from a breaker although I guess there wont be too many Freelander 2's around in breakers.

I know the car is out of warranty but I would try Land Rover to see if they will make a good will payment as that should not happen to a car that age unless the mileage is sky high.

Hi Mantamad,
Thanks for your response. Its done 75k miles. Would you consider that sky high?
Should have said that the mechanic has found 2 engines. one at 2.5k and one at 2k (ouch!)
Cheers

Its higher than average but a modern diesel engine should so double that and more mileage with ease, still worth a call to Land Rover though

Thanks for that. I'll call them tomorrow.
My son drives an old but much loved defender thats a bit like triggers broom! But it just keeps on going............
Will post up their response tomorrow evening
Cheers

Good Evening everyone,

I thought I'd post an update regarding my explosive engine!

Well, to begin with, I've found a 2.2 TD SE one. It's a 2009 engine which has done 8000 miles. The company are a 4x4 specialist so it should be OK. However, one slight concern is that they only offer a 30 day warranty on an engine that is going to cost me £2000. Is this normal? Should I ask them what they would do if I get this engine professionally fitted and something happens when the mechanics fire it up. Would they have to replace it and should they pay the cost of the mechanic to do it again?

Another thought that crossed my mind (and there are many!) is, if I decide to sell the Landy on would people be put off by the fact that a new engine has been fitted. I know how people can be after working in retail for 24 years. To be honest the new engine will be newer than the original broken one.

One final poser for you all. What if I decide to sell the car as it is, perfect body and interior but with a broken engine. Would there be interest? Who do I sell it to? What would it be worth?

Any help would be most appreciated.

Cheers

If you try and sell the broken car you will probably have to knock off £3000!!!!! As although you know its only the engine a buyer may be a bit more sceptical!

To be honest people might be a bit put off but if you were to trade it in they might not have a problem as long as you have receipts.

If you get the new engine fitted and sell later on, as its much lower mileage I would see this as a bonus as long as there is documentaion to prove mileage when bought etc.

I think generally warranties on these engines usually are quite short, only enough time to get it fitted and check its running fine - perhaps you would have some come back through sale of goods act if it went wrong (one for trading standards) in fact, you may have a case with your current engine.

Thanks Mantamad.
I hadn't realised that if I put a newer engine in the mileage would change on the dashboard to suit the new engine. Is that what you are saying? Are you allowed to change the mileage? I thought it was very illegal. You know 'off with his head' type of illegal.
Cheers

No the mileage on the dash wont change but you hopefully should get the mileage of the new engine on the bill so it will prove the miles covered when bought.

Its not illegal to change the mileage on the dash clock, its only illegal to sell a car with a false mileage shown.

presumeably the engine is out of a crash, you need to buy like for like, auto/ manual , makes fitting easier, i reckon you were plain unlucky, 2.2 engines seem very good to date.

As long as you inform the dvla of the change & provide them with the new engine number, they will ammend the log book & as long as you've replaced like with like, you won't even have to mention it when it comes to selling.
