My first big land rover task.. Advice please :-)

So now that works a little quiet I've started ill post updates and average time it takes to do stuff.

So day one: decided to take engine out, all my tools and clutch parts have arrived, cleared out my workshop of the electrical panels I build and started at 3:00pm worked for 5 hours following the Haynes manual by me own.

So far most things are disconnected, even the exhaust nuts came off after a 10min soak in wd40 special penetrating spray (not the standard stuff),

Tomorrow's task with a extra pair of hands :) get them bastid bell housing bolts out and lift the 300tdi lump out.
 
Hi all, My Disco needed the clutch fork replacing, today I have decided to have a bash at it, I was a bit hesitant due to the size of the gearbox and was not sure whether to tackle it or take it to a garage, but thought sod it it's only nuts and bolts. 1st job was jack it up, then exhaust off, propshafts off, handbrake cable off, ETC ETC!! Biggest job getting the the nuts and bolts around the top half of the bellhousing, got all that sorted then seat and center console out, drill pop rivets out strap around gearbox, engine hoist in and with a bit of jiggling out it came yippee!! Took about 4 hours to do so I don't think that was too bad. So new bits ordered inc a clutch kit, and worked on low range selector as it was all seized up that took about an hour and all works now. I just wish I had built enough courage to do it sooner as it wasn't no way as hard as I had expected it to be. Can't wait for the bits to arrive and then start putting it back together. :)

done a few of these and for me depends on if you have a ramp or not

done about 8 on ramps and 3 without , the 3 without I removed the engine instead

this being the last one I did , I know its a defender but not much difference

the ramp in the backround was not in service
 
nice to see! its a job id do again BUT I just got quoted 250 quid for a 300tdi clutch change from a friend I went laning with, so id only do it if I had the time :)
 
Can anyone explain this!! Started to put gearbox back in yesterday, we got the gearbox in position spent 2 poxy hours trying to mate engine / gearbox , it wouldn't have it tried all ways, jack front of engine up rocked the box waste of time, box lifted up and down pried with a leaver no go, in the end rain stopped play so went in the house flustrated. Done a good dozen clutches on various cars over the years not had this problem, only difference with this one is the size! Went out after work today re-jacked engine crawled underneath waggled the gearbox and bingo it mated :):) Got most of the nuts and bolts in then rain + thunder stopped play for today :mad: Am sure nothing different was done, so you tell me what I was doing wrong!!

Did mine recently via engine out so i cant help, but dont bother trying to put the top bellhousing nut back on cos it doesnt need it n it will save you loads of hassle..
 
I spent ages trying to mate engine and box, I litterly managed to get a few studs through the holes, put nuts on them and tightened the nuts up to pull both together, I removed the stud at the top all together ;)

Got quoted 250quid to change a clutch in a 300tdi last weekend too :( ah well I enjoyed it all when it was going well :p would do it again engine out :)

Thanks for that, i'll leave them tow out then! I couldn't believe how many nuts and bolts there are that hold the gearbox and engine together.

I had some missing out the bottom where the threads had been stripped, helicoiled them with the world worst helicoil kit, had to put threaded bar in now as far as it will go then tighten a nut to it, only two holes though one helicoil worked! :)

As it was my first time doing it I spent ages trying to split the engine and box with out realising there were still 3 more nuts to go! Well I know for next time
 
With the help from you guys I have managed to get the gearbox back in finally, that was one big job!! hopefully wont have to do one of those again. So tomorrow will be booking it in for its MOT, Get ready.:D:D
 
Nice one, :) good luck with the MOT, I somehow gotta get mine in shape for the mot :( well what's left of the discovery...
 
too right, well after spending most of my wages on it thinking whats the next thing to break, I take it out for a drive or laning and remember why I put up with it :D
