So we made it to Thetford!

Just a small group of five Landies for the trip

XY switch chucked the Black D2’s gearbox into limp mode on the second run so that was parked up in a village and he jumped into the other D2

Lovely 110 that did require a lift home on a recovery truck after the turbo gave up the ghost on the A11 heading home.

Some of the lanes were quite damp

Which I enjoyed :D

One lane pretty flooded

So all in all a pretty awesome day for the van.
After 200+ miles of half lanes and half duel carriageway didn’t get a single issue or problem.
No over heating, wheels didn’t fall off, nothing!!
Yet to see the GoPro footage but hopefully it came out well.

All in all very happy

It’s actually a 300tdi auto chassis and running gear with a Discovery 2 body bolted on top.
The same one that was used to tow my broken Grand Cherokee back to the dealer last year.

Productive Saturday afternoon at my mates workshop.

Wasn’t going to be defeated by these chassis bolts so decided on a new tack.

FIRE!!!!!

And one of the angriest air tools, the mighty chisel

FC37407D-9952-42CE-A15C-7628F2103882.jpeg

Five minutes of heating and the bolt was eased towards the fuel tank exposing a gap between the rusted nut and the chassis

Then time for the death wheel

Bye bye nut

C38D9BA0-1B0F-4970-B274-788CB3C4A0E5.jpeg

Then all that was left was to get the air chisel on the inside of the bolt and force it back towards the outside far enough to get a set of mile grips onto it and wiggle what was left of the bolt out.

Then could start lining up the tank guard

CB49992C-7534-4220-817F-41A37D056F6B.jpeg

And bolted into place!

We did have to lose the centre bumper bracket temporarily as the bolts were not long enough to go through the tank guard and bracket.
However for now the bumper is bolted on when the original side bolts which is enough till I buy some longer bolts (which I would have already done if I had remembered to measure the original ones:rolleyes: )

All of this now means I have a pair of proper rear recovery points. Which means can go to the local off road site at the end of the month :D

This method of getting the bolts out is highly recommended. Wasn’t more than 10 minutes a side to do.

So been thinking about this a lot lately and I think I’m going to be selling my commercial Disco 1.
Still like the car but really want to get myself a track car as a lot of my friends do this.
Plus having the D3 the van just doesn’t get used really.

Will add more when I get a proper for sale add up.

Nooooooooo!

But having said that, I can't say I blame you, the D3 is a smashing motor and I can see the appeal of a track car, Lakeside arena round the corner from you I suppose too.

Shame I have so much invested in my own D1 or that will make a smashing green lane motor for some luck man.

Haven the completely made my mind up, been handy having this week.
Missus had D3 and I went cross country to work in the van in 8 inches of snow.

But I’m not that bothered about pay and play much anymore and getting a snorkel fitted to the D3 this year along with AT tyres for the 19’s so gonna be fine for green laning.

Hi buddy I'm considering doing the same body swap as you've done. I know the front body mounts line up
did you make spacers for the rear mounts, what other issues did you have to over come to do the conversion.

Cheers Kev ;)

Took the van out Thursday night on the hunt for stranded motorists.

Didn’t have to go far, the staff car park at work actually.

Flat battery, wouldn’t start off jump leads so towed it to the warehouse, disconnected the battery for a minute then it fired right up.

Then went out with a few mates in the more rural Essex areas to see what we can find

Managed to rescue a stuck bmw and get a guy home so that was good.

Night ended by getting home around 2am with a semi stripped drive belt so no snow fun last night annoyingly

And then the fun ended. Friday night after work driving out the airfield and on pops battery light and no power steering.
Limp it back to the yard and get a lift home.

Then today after fixing the D3’s brakes we went to get the van from the yard.

Yer, tensioner was a bit past it

And just quickly tried fixing lack of heat with a new thermostat

Unfortunately still haven’t solved it. Put heaters on and get warm air for 10-20 seconds then just goes stone cold.
Same if stationary or when driving so not sure what’s wrong there.
