My defender 110 SW project

It required a small amount of 'pressure' applied to it to make it fit as it is too wide, by increasing the curve slightly and adjusting the end plates it fitted in fine. I would have preferred a proper defender one but I had the disco one in my shed and it looks good now it is on
 
A quick update as I spent a couple of hours on the Land Rover yesterday but phone was dead so no pictures.

Went to repack the other rear hub but one of the caliper bolts was so tight nothing I did would loosen it! I even managed to bend a bend a spanner trying to get a bit of extra leverage! So I did the best job I could just by removing the driveshaft and flange, ill do the job properly when I am not working to get it on the road!

I also decided to blank off the holes in the rear roof which would have had vents in them, I used a fairly thick bit if oversized ally plate so I can mount my rear work lights to them and hide the slight colour mismatch.

I also made a pair of rear body supports, the ones that run from just behind the rear wheel arch to the tub to stop the rear body flapping around, because I ran out of black paint and I had made them out of steel, they are bright red as it was all I had left!

I managed to finally sort out the mess of wiring as well, as I speak, so it could all change between now and the MOT! All of the lights that are supposed to work work! Currently the glow plug light and diff lock light don't work, I'm not 100% sure yet if it is because these systems don't work or there is a wiring fault but they can wait until after the MOT.

I finally mounted my first switch into my mud stuff dash! Currently it works the fog light until I get a replacement but it will work the roof lights.

The only pre mot jobs I have left is to replace the washers, mount the front repeater securely, mount the dash securely and a few other odds and sods. Also my new radiator has arrives so ill for that as well.
 
Managed to spend another full day on the land rover on Monday and it is now outside my house for the first time since I bought it! The mot is booked for Monday and 99% of jobs are now complete!

I decided to have a look at the glow plugs first and discovered that the wires had been hacked off by the timer, it would seem to use the 12v feed for something else! So I set about reinstating it, I then discovered that there was a few melted wires in the loom, probably something to do with the reason it now has two aftermarket fuse holders instead of the standard fusebox! So the dash I had carefully fitted had to come out completely to give me access to trace and replace the wires! I did manage to get the glow plugs working though! I also discovered that the diff lock light wasn't working as the wire from the switch ended halfway up the bulkhead!

I have also managed to swap the rear door lock so it actually locks, wired in a secret and started tidying the inside ready for the mot. I am still a little worried about the emissions but my friend is bringing back a valve spring tool that allows you to remove them with the head on so will swap them and try again if it fails!

Once the MOT is out of the way I can start moving on to prettying it up! I need to wire in the roof lights and start looking for a roof lining and plastic interior panels and carpet!

Damn stupid land rovers why do we even bother!

Mot is booked for tomorrow morning so I arranged to drop it over tonight as I am working tomorrow, so I went to take it over there, first thing is after a couple of open and closes drivers door won't open, have a look and the bar to the door catch has popped out and plastic retainer is nowhere to be seen, I put the bar back in and 9/10 times it holds, then I go to take it to the mot station via the petrol station, after the door bar pops off again, when I restart the bulb in the temp gauge blows, this means that it is only by a street light that I notice that the temp is rising! So I turn round and take it home and find that the new handbrake shoes have bedded in slightly and now the lever comes all the way back, not a problem spanners are in the back ill just nip it up, negative the adjuster, which I stripped down and freed off when I changed the shoes, now won't move! The temp problem I'm 99% sure is just because it needs bleeding again after I changed the radiator.

Does anyone want to make me an offer on it!!!
 
I'm in warminster in Wiltshire

Well it went for its mot this morning and failed on a few points, mainly the handbrake lever coming too far back and lacking performance but also for the the fog light, tester couldn't find switch, and no seatbelt sockets in back, again becaus he couldn't find them, so I showed him the switch and seatbelts so they were crossed off the list leaving just the handbrake. This might be down to having fitted new shoes that have bedded in far enough to give too much clearance but not enough to allow the adjuster to click round so ill pull the drum off and have a look.

It's still getting hot though so I have ordered a new water pump and thermostat. Hopefully this solves it or its going to be head off and have a look!

On the plus side the only advisory was a rusty bolt on the lower spring mount!
 
Teabag cracking thread and nice defender, I too have a defender and work on it in the workshop when i get a chance.

Little wise word of warning careful what you put on here with regards to parts....you know what I mean:rolleyes: someone up here is being investigated for the same reason and I've been questioned on occasions.

The good old monkeys will take an interest. So keep receipts for everything, just in-case...hope yu get yours MOT,d soon, I need a new gearbox and rear crank oil seal.....expensive times!:(
 
I don't use any military parts on my rover, not worth the hassle to save a couple of quid,my wolf wheels were bought off a friend who bought a 90 unseen from withams and found a spare set of wheels in the back!

Plus as I work in a tank workshop not very much would fit anyway! Might be fun to try and graft a cvrt track onto the back end like a centaur though!
 
Well as I make my first journey in the land rover down to bordon on Wednesday, I had a look over the land rover and found a fan belt with no teeth! Amazingly the ignition light has been on and has been charging fine!

I also planned to find out why my wiper blades didn't park, I had to hold the switch until it reached the bottom of the screen. I took the cover off and found that the green wire had been cut, I joined it back up and found this made the wipers park at the top of the screen, revealing the reason for the cut wire!

After a quick google, I took the motor off and swapped the cam round, put it back together and tested it, realising that I had managed to fit it back the same way again grr!

At that point the dark and cold beat me so I came in to drown my sorrows in a cup of tea!
 
sounds like an easy fix!....ma head gasket went last week, caught it before it proper went!.........Trying to retrim my roof liner easyer said than done....made a hash but it i'll do!
 
Mines pretty smoky so I am going to order a head gasket etc and swap it all, I'm still having the problem where it gets hot in traffic so hopefully it is just the gasket on the way out!
 
Thought it was about time I updated this, although I haven't got any pics as I only have a short time at the weekend to do any work!

I have been going to Hampshire and back a few times now, and apart from the annoying lack of heating and the noise!! It has been going ok, apart from this Friday when about a mile from home was a massive pop and a loss of power, it was dark and damp and I was pretty sure it was just the turbo pipe coming off so I carried on slowly and when I reached home a quick check under the bonnet confirmed that's all it was so I left it for Saturday!

When I did get round to it on Saturday I found it was another of the amazing bodges had failed again! My 200tdi engine is fitted with a turbo from a 300tdi, for reasons unknown, and the pipe from the turbo to the intercooler is made up from cut up sections of a 300tdi pipe, this was not done very well and having not got much to make a permanent solution, I used a spare bit of piping from my shed to make a slightly better bodge! Will test it later going back to camp!

I have also got a bit closer to wiring in my roof lights! The loom from the lights to the relay and earth is made, soldiered and wrapped and run into the 110, just need to sort out the relay wiring and switch! I'm going to have it wired so they can be isolated completely, switch on with main beam or switched independently, just need to get on with it!

I received a fairly large box on Saturday containing timing belt and head rebuild kit so hopefully will get a chance to get that done this week now I have joined the car club so will have access to a workshop again!

I may even take pictures if I remember!!
