Hi there fellow defender owners.
recently, I have been experiencing a wining when starting up in the morning and typical of me I keep putting off fixing it. Last week I found that I was getting a low grumbling sound when driving which pushed me into checking the engine oil level. I found that the oild level was very low, so bought some Magnatec and topped her up. However, in my panic, I over filled her to about 4-5mmabove the upper level notch on the dip stick. I also check the power steering fluid level and found that to be low, so I topped that up with the recommended Automatic transmission fluid. Since these top ups, I have had a squealing noise everytime I accelerate and it is getting gradually worse. Anyone know what it can be? I thought at first it was the Power Steering, but when I decelerate it goes away, so that to me seem to point to the drive system......HELP!!!!

does the noise increase and decrease with engine speed or road speed? If it is engine speed do a search for 300tdi penny trick.

try remove the fan belt and see if it disapears if it doesnt at least youve eliminated quite a few things if it goes check all you pulleys

Hi check all inter cooler hoses and pipes, air box etc ! Pipes from turbo make a hell of a row when split or loose !! Check hose from vacuum pump to servo!! All high pressure really and sound like a whistle if leaks are present!! Loose alternator drive belt sounds similar !! Put a long screwdriver point down onto the body of the alternator put the handle against your ear , rev engine !! You can precisely locate a rough bearing this way!! Good luck !!

Check also the belt idler tensioner ! These can squeal like a pig !! It's the large shiny roller you see when looking down past rad cowling !!

Thanx also Jailon, Martin1512 & yorkshirelandys....your advice has been taken on board and I will let you know how I get on ....cheers again :))

I have same problem, squeaking, but it is only when Under Load (when accelerating and moving) not when stationary.

Also, there was a bad vibration, again under load, at around 1500 - 1750 revs. Ease off acc and it goes. Have been told it's the EGR Valve. Is this correct?

And finally, thought I'd check the diff lock to see if that was causing a problem. Put it on and drove for 100 yds and the landy felt as though it was having and epileptic fit and vibrating severely.

Anybody able to help me?

if its vibrating that bad i wouldnt drive it as there is obviously something quite seriously wrong with it. could be any number of things that is very difficult (nigh impossible) to diagnose over a forum.

much more information would be required to assist in a diagnosis.

best to start another thread regarding that problem

Hello by the way

Check also the belt idler tensioner ! These can squeal like a pig !! It's the large shiny roller you see when looking down past rad cowling !!

if you can squirt some lubricating oil on the tensioner bearing and it dissapears you have found your problem. I had this and it turned out the tensioner mounting bolt wasnt done up!!! Tightened it up and the sqeaking stopped immediately.
