Ah! Mine had one of them too - front diff case fins full of "oil" - was the engine oil cooler hoses - they were both :censored:

what kind of land rover owner travels without tools......

will give it a good clean to see whats what after i have sorted all the basic mechanics first, still got another wheel bearing to sort, rebuild that front prop, the rears not looking amazing either so thats on the list, top up all oils, tappets, air filter, oil and filter, de egr it properly (not just unplug the cable and the hose like the PO did) and sort out the drivers seat as its bloody uncomfortable!
oh and weld that rear damper mount on and replace the rear dampers themselves..
and...

Then once its fixed probably sell it for a loss

yeah, that's the fav atm. not much choice up here though. i'm going to hit the north east in a month or so and see what's about.
i'm after 2008+, it's to be used for carrying stuff for work, so don't want to spend too much when it's going to get a lil trashed.

it was a mazda bongo actually
im very dissapointed in the guys knot tying skills. The crummy blue rope he used to bodge it on with failed this morning. I couldnt tell... it was still just as knackered!
I suspect the MOT tester got a rather nice wodge in his pocket for passing this thing through an MOT.
I am going to weld up the damper mount tonight, sort the last wheel bearing, new air filter and egr delete, oh and window wipers that i swear inject grease onto the windscreen as they are used.
Cant do much more tonight, got waaayyyyy more than that to do to the 110 before the weekend!

when he says weld, he means weld it with superglue and if that fails, he'll try his 3quid soldering iron he got from maplins 15 years ago

it was a fiver and it was only 12 years ago
it is actually welded now *that welder off chris is much better than my old un'*
Wobble is still there, all the wheels bearings have no play although the front left is sounding rough as a badger so thats on the list to do. The steering damper is looking dead. I cant imagine the damper being an intrinsic part of the steerings stability though surely? At about 65 mph it goes into a high frequency wobble, not a slower one like what is caused by panhard rod bushes. It feels like the wheels wobbling its pips off. But i cant find the play!
egr is now blanked off and air filter replaced - runs alot smoother now. Inlet manifold was really caked up with sludgy crap.

terrafirma heavy duty steering damper ordered. Need to get it sorted for her as i cant let her drive it till its all sorted.

the damper just masks problems , have you had the wheels balanced it did wonders for my death wobble after i had done the usual suspects:
wheel bearings
swivel bearings
panhard bushes
steering damper
then i had fresh tyres and had em balanced it was like a new car (for a few days til i went out playing)

you really need two people to check the joints. once to rock the wheel and the other to eye it up. maybe someone will help at lz11?

Erm rope through the window works for that, my wife is not so helpful and I'm Billy no mates so sometimes you have to find a way.
Engine on, in neutral brakes on, rear wheels chocked rope to top of wheel, climb under and give it a gentle tug. Bobs your whatsit!
