Hi, I've got a 1999 td5, it's doing 21/22 to gallon, if I'm doing short journeys, towing sometimes with 3 ton on the back, or doing 200 miles on the motorway, it still returns the same, it's got a power box fitted, but if I remove it, it still does the same. It passed it's mot a few weeks ago and I was told on the smoke test it was has good has any new car,it's done 110000, it's auto too, every time I put fuel in I write down the litres to keep check, thanks Phil

My manual was doing 24-25 mpg with Maxxis AT tyres (can't remember the size) on a mix of motorway and town driving. Changed to Pirelli Scorpion 235/70/16 (think thats right) and it went to 28-29 mpg.
As above, autos are more thirsty but it's worth looking at the tyres. Also, I would be very surprised if you maintained the same mpg when towing 3 tonnes.

The tyres def make a difference. My D2 Td5 manual was returning a reasonably constant 30mpg on Cooper Discoverer ATRs whereas fitting BFG ATs saw that drop to a 27-28 mpg. Thats a big drop when all other factors are the same. Adding a rooftent knocked it back further to 25ish :(

I to found a big difference changing my wheels /tyres . I upped my wheels for 19s putting 255'50'19 tyres on . Not keen on the wag look but as I tow 3ton up and down the motorway a lot and don't go in the muddy stuff I found I was getting 3/5 mpg more and a lot less round noise. And handling to me felt better on the motorway towing . The rest of my td5 is standard

Mine's (2001 ES auto TD5) about the same - drops to about 20 when towing our 1400 Kg caravan. Normally if on motorways I'll be doing 70 solo / 60 towing - I think that extra 10 mph is quite expensive.

I've been keeping a record of every drop of fuel I've put in it and mileages in a spreadsheet (now have over 4 years worth).

I've found similar with my V8,it manual and does around 22mpg solo on a run and 17-18mpg towing, take it over 70 though and mpg plummets
