Mounting a roof tent on a Range Rover Classic?

Hi guys,

What's the best way to mount a roof tent on a Range Rover Classic? Most have access over the rear door, which is great on side opening doors like a Discovery or Defender. However, can this be done on a RRC, or will the upper tailgate hit the base of the tent and/or prevent the ladder from lowering?

The tent I am looking at is a 1.2m Hannibal roof tent. I would also like the 'skirt' part to give a standing area for getting changed, etc. Can these be mounted onto the side of the vehicle?

Any info/advice/pics would be great. Ta!

All the range rover roof tent pics i saw on google are side access tents.
I bought a used Maggiolina Small (shell tent) for next summer it is side access too.

I wanted a rear access tent (James Baroud Colombus) to benefit the safety device ladder i have but that one was only 380 GBP.
 
OK, well I've just purchased a Maggiolina Safari rooftent, and I have a pair of Thule roof bars to fit it with. Question is, will they support the weight of the tent (+ my brother and I @ around 13-14 stone each) oh do I need an additional support bar?

For the additional cost. I'd get another bar. It will be more secure off-road. Give more support for the both of you and take a dodgy Moroccan longer to nick when you are wandering around the Medina :D

Actually thats morre likely to happen in the UK or on route to Morocco....fact.
 
Thanks Muddy fox. Have actually bought a Thule roof rack with two locking bars, so will either use 3 or 4 Thule bars alone (with two of them being lockings ones) or the roof rack itself if the tent fits in it, again with the bars underneath.

Will post some pics once I've got it all set up! :)
 
Hi Mike,

As good as it sounds, 3 roof bars really doesn't work most of the time.
The roof, or the gutter support is not flat.
What I am trying to explain is, if you have 3 roof bars, then there is every chance the roof tent will balance on just 2 of teh bars.
leaving one of the bars with a gap between the top of the bar, and the bottom of the roof tent.
2 roof bars is more than enough.
You can try three, but you may find that you will need some "packing" ontop of one of the roof bars, so it brings it up to the same level as teh other two.

I had 3, but ended up just running with 2.

Thanks vette - my brother and I weigh around 14 stone each, that's a lot of weight through two roof bars! I've got a full Thule roof rack with lockable roof bars on its way, plus the two current bars, so will use three or four bars and pad them out as you say. For the journey home I just used two bars and it was fine:

One thing though - HOW THE HELL do you get these things on and off the roof without banging/scratching the crap out of the car? I'm gonna need to use four people next time, bloody heavy trying to manoeuvere it above your head, over the roof!!

Getting the RT on the roof bars is not too bad.
You and your Bro. should manage no problem, providing your not "shorties"
One of you each side, pust the RT high above your heads.
Slowly walk down either side of the RRC.
It does get heavy, thats for sure !
I had the Hanibal style.
I had mine fitted for entry over the drivers door.
By fitting it that way, it left the rear door unobstructed.
Also, the overall enclosing cover, could be left in the mounting channels of RT.
The overall cover would then just drape down to the ground almost.
The LC had a 50mm front lift, and a 60mm rear lift, so quite tall.

I'm sure I have a brand new packaged rrc camel trophy style roof rack here will ask my bro if he wants to sell it? If its any good to you?

I bought an Oasis2 roof tent that can be mounted so that the door is to the rear or sides. Unfortunately I don't think they make em any more so you may have to get one secondhand.

I bought a set of 3 rhino bars to mount the bugger a few weeks back but have only just had time to picke em up. Hopefully I can start using it now. The missus is scared of heights..... (even more scared than I am:eek::D) so I may end up having to mount it so she can get in and out via the bonnet.:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::D
 
Hi ratty, I think the Oasis are a 'fair weather' tent, not sure if they'd withstand a Saharan sandstorm! I've bought a used Maggiolina Safari now. Post some pics when you've mounted your tent - I've seen an Oasis before on an RR Classic:
