Only had the 03 Disco SE for 10 days, so a bit of a newbe question. What is behind the little grill to the left of the headlight beam adjusting switch? There appears to be a motor behind it which runs all the time once the ignition is on. Should it be running? Also looking through the grill it looks well cruded up, should I take it off and clean it up?

Yes you should, blow the dust out of it and lube it's bearings
In-car temperature sensor
The in-car temperature sensor is an encapsulated thermistor that provides the ATC ECU with an input of cabin air
temperature. The sensor is integrated into the inlet of an electric fan, which is installed behind a grille in the fascia
outboard of the steering column. The fan runs continuously, while the ignition is on, to draw air through the grille and
across the sensor.

Thanks again for quick replies! That makes sense. I will take it off tomorrow and give it a good clean and lube bearing. It sounds a bit dry if that makes sense.

Still trying to find something that is wrong with it, but so far everything works - tempting fate!!
 
Took off sensor and took it to bits, cleaned it all up and put a little silicone in the bushes and put it all back together. Bit of a fiddle getting the top fixing screw back in due to limited access, but done worse!
All running quiet now, you can only just hear it.

Now back to my a/c compressor. A week after fitting a second-hand one the bearing / clutch is squeaking :eek:
Luckily Equicar 4x4 quite happy to send a replacement next week. Just got to pay for another re-gas plus the hassle of swapping again. Am I going to wish I had just spent out on a new one to start with?
 
Yes quite agree, but at £65 for SH and £350 - £400 for new, I thought it worth a punt. May be proved wrong though!
 
undo the lower fuse cover flap. The back of the fan is visible if looking up from below. Disconnect the white wiring multiplug. Then using a stubby Philips screw driver unscrew the 2 screws holding the fan to the dash. You will have to go by feel a bit for the top one. Once fan is off you can unscrew the 2 side screws and the fan will come apart to aid cleaning / lubing. Refitting is the reverse. Top screw is a little pain due to limited access with screw driver. I fitted bottom one 1st and then used some bluetack on the screw head to hold it onto the screw driver. You will need to swear a bit each time you drop the screw!! But only a 10 - 15 min job really.
