I have been using the same local independent garage for nearly 20 years, probably average 3 mots a year. I usually get 10% discount off the full price.
I have no complaint supporting a local place and paying full price.
I haven’t had a fail yet. Since the mots changed I haven’t had any advisors.
The nearest I have been to a fail was on emissions, I just needed to adjust the carbs a bit to bring the reading down while it was on the ramp.

I've got the daughters Honda Jazz in for mot today, it's got the airbag light on and refuses to reset. The problem appears to be the steering ring. Honda say there isn't one in the country for her model, will take 2 to 3 weeks to arrive and costs £270 +vat. Got a scrapyard one for £15, fingers crossed its ok. Garage is fitting it cos I hate disturbing airbags. Bloody daughter dropped her car off at our house filthy dirty inside and out with no petrol in it.

Which daughter was it?

Which daughter was it?
Number 3 the eldest. She smokes in her car and it stinks. I've had to vac it, wipe down the dash and plastics and put a dangly air freshener in it. I was too embarrassed to take it for the mot in the state it was in. I reckon mot testers make a judgment about the way a car is looked after by the condition of the inside. It wouldn't have been fair to expect the tester to sit in it especially if he is a non smoker.

So she was/is the grade A student yet she smokes?
Like the point about MOTs and smoking. I don't smoke and keep my car tidy, unlike my house! Never thought it may have a positive effect on the test, but thinking about it you may well be right.

I might have got a bit mixed up, that's the trouble with having 7 kids. The A grade one is the youngest of the three, so she must be number 3, the one with the stinky car is the middle one, so number 2, she is a ward sister at the local hospital. I smoke but you wouldn't know it by looking at the inside of my car. Years ago, I worked part time in a garage, the mot tester there was a very fussy bloke who was a bit OCD. on more than one ocassion, he refused to mot a car because of the state of it. If you went to buy a second hand car and the inside was filthy, you would wonder about the state of its mechanicals wouldn't you?

Col

Well, the daughters car failed the mot, the second hand steering ring I got off eBay was the wrong one despite the seller claiming it was off the same make, model and year. So, the hunt continues. I find mot's stressful and I don't need to add to it worrying about cars that aren't mine.
