MOT Test disaster

My 90 had it's mot test today and I honestly expected it to pass but it failed big style.

The tester has been really really harsh. I took it for the spring mount welding and a chassais check. After that he took it to the test centre and the tester failed it on all this. Advised recent repairs and even failed on a handbrake that locks up so tight it would stop you setting off with it on. He even failed it on the new welding. While at another garage months ago the mechanic said he was amazed at how solid the chassais still is so how can 2 people have opposite opinions!

I think he has been very harsh and I dare say lied on some stuff.

Does all this sound like a huge job? Has anyone else had this at landrover mot time?

I think you need to find a better welder!

INSANE! It works all the time OK? How did he test it.

They probably didn't feel or look at the spring mounts. The rest may be solid.

Yes I do think so, how pally is he with your "mechanic" is your mechanic looking for work?

It does sound like a fair bit to me, all the spring mounts and stuff will need replaced really or fixed but to be honest it may be easier to weld on new ones depending just how bad they are. I did mine on a discovery years ago and I just welded strips of steel all around the top and seam welded it in.

Brakes are an issue, they should work, could just be air, creep to be honest could also just be the vac pump pulling it down, could be an easy enough fix, or maybe a master or seal kit somewhere.

The belt fraying MIGHT be fixable with a lighter to burn off the frays - if the other one is not retracting might be worth getting some from a breaker/ebay anyway.

Remove the middle seat cushion and leave a toolbox there, no seat fitted, no need for belt - I assume you don't use it, or is the belt hiding down the back - if it is I would be annoyed, they are not meant to remove things, but checking for a seat belt would be on my list of things worth doing.

Engine smoke, it could be fixed with diesel injector cleaner, it could be turbo oil... lots of things really, run it on veg oil for the test!

If the joint is OK fit a new boot over the joint, I caught one before it actually got wet and the grease contaminated and I just put a new boot on as the joint was still solid and grease clean.

The rest is welding!

I'm waiting for a taxi and we gonna look together and see what it's all about. I don't believe for a minutiae it is as bad as said. It's not had seatbelt in the middle on old mot tests either.

I can't understand the handbrake not working it's absolutely perfect and locks up solid. corrosion in foot well after it was plated by one of the best landrover garages in Leeds! I think the substance underneath is waxoil from when it got done last year!

isn't it an 87 with a 200tdi conversion? technically they shouldn't be testing to the later standards but just to make sure it's under something like 2.5 iirc. << check that though

your brakes from your other thread is due to you not fixing the snail cams on the drums.

Bloody hell! That's some list! Feel sorry for you.
I thought my '87 was going to get a list like that on her last MOT, needed a fog lamp bulb...
It definitely depends on which tester you go to though!

Behind the waxoil some small holes have been found...

And both bump stop brackets are needing repair.

Then there's theese two holes in the arch Wich I thaught would not have been a problem...

The mechanics going to have a word about the other stuff and bleed out the brakes and adjust drum shoes.

Bit of a bad day but in a way problems where found early - at least that's what I'm telling myself to cheer me up lol. Total bill will be £610 as he repaired my spring mount too.

Yes I been thinking that it's surprising what that stuff can hide, I thaught I checked it out properly but clearly I hadn't. I think they must have used a screwdriver to find them.

How can they fail the front inner arches? They're not part of the structure.

Those shock mounts are likely to be covering some nasty corrosion but those holes in the inner wing should not matter.
