hiya

well the good news is my freelander passed its mot today,

but, the rear suspension spring has broke, he said i can still use it but not to go of road in it etc,

have been looking online and was wondering how hard are they to change , always been used to the series 3s and the leaf springs but know these are alot different

just get really annoyed with my back now completely destroyed but just wondering somehow if i can sit on the floor and try and get them out

may i ask has anyone replaced theres please, have u just replaced the springs or is it better to replace the whole suspension unit complete in one go, see if all has to come apart

thks so much guys

if i were you with a bad back and i know how that feels i would get someone to do it for you ,if you diy you need to remove the supension leg, and then have a pair of spring compressors and undo the top of the leg and take the spring off but being as it is broken you may not need the compressors to take it of, but you will need them to put the new spring on also while you are at it put a new bearing on the top ,with a bad back it can be a mauling job

hiya, thks for that, i think i defentely will give that a miss, ive got plates screws etc in my back dont want to add to it, lol

thinking it may be more cost effective to buy a pair of struts and springs as it looks that it all has to come out and there the same age, so can fit and forget etc,

wondering if u can by them complete with the springs etc all fitted, also trying to see if it comes with all the bushs etc, trying to track the part numbers down etc,

thks again for the info, are the usual monroe, etc ok or are there makes to stay away from

appreciate the help

Hiya

I'm very suprised to, but he did me a massive favour and he's been doing mine for the last 3 years,

I didn't even notice it as both sides are still even etc

But know I must get it done asap and keep it on the tarmac

if it was broken and he passed it he wants reporting not bothered how well he is known

nothing worse than Crap MOT testers and when ya have been involved as a passenger in a crash coz a mot man passed a car what was fooked i find it Disgusting to read that he did it for favors

its nowt against you Gstuart just from my past it really grates to see idiots still MOT testing

hiya, yep quite understand where ur coming from, but now concerned in him doing me a favour that it is dangerous to carry on using it etc,

im using it tommorow going down the motorway and now worried something will happen etc.

maybe i will see if i can look at it tommorow to see how bad it is, but a broken spring is afterall broken, it isnt down on one side and suppose it could have been broke for a while , but was down the motorway only the other day and didnt feel any difference

thks again though and it will only be like it for a few weeks until i can get the funds together

hiya

also meant to say, what companies do u recommend please, have been trying to findnthe springs, new bottom bolts and the top bearings, mine is from vin 2A

cant find complete struts with the coils already fitted yet,

thks again and i think the less i use this the better

A cracked spring can be a MOT pass, if it fall with in the below criteria

Where a coil spring is incomplete, cracked or fractured at an extreme end where the spring locates on the spring mount, it should only be rejected if:

. the function of the spring is impaired

. following jacking, the spring ends do not locate correctly when the vehicle is lowered into the normal running position without assistance

These criteria should also be applied to springs that have been deliberately shortened or modified in order to lower the suspension.

Not so much an idiot as some then....

You clearly don't know the rules and you don't know where on the spring the damage is, so why make a statement like that??

I find it disgusting that you shoot your mouth off without knowing the full facts.

Can someone help him out with the information he requires and leave the bickering alone, sick of reading posts that turn into bitching matches

tbh gary, if it's who I think it was (don't name them), he wouldn't let you drive out in something that was dangerous, after all, if it was going to fail while driving on the road, it would eventually come back to him.

like he said, off roading would cause an issue because the spring would be exercised to its limits, but on road probably ok.

englishbullterrier has kindly provided chapter and verse, so I guess that's the route he's gone down with the MOT certificate.

good luck with this, keep safe.
