major disaster around 18 miles out circa 6 pm, top rad hose split along the thermostat end jubilee clip and all the water disappeared as demonstrated by sudden over heating

managed to fix it by swapping the hose round so the split was at the rad end and covered by the jubilee clip and filling up with buxton from a local shop

got home and hoping it won't freeze tonight. have to drain and add antifreeze in the morning and sort out the hose properly.

after that though every time you lifted the accelerator to stop the engine conked out so the drive home was a tad irritating, managed to get home using the handbrake in traffic jams, trying to catch it on the clutch or just having to restart at traffic lights and keep the foot on the pedal.

guessing the accelerator linkage may have moved?

You did well getting home, very resourceful, shows it’s a good idea to keep a few tools in the landy , don’t know why it wouldn’t tick over , you would think if cross shaft loose the worst case would be tickover with pedal not accelerating Does yours have the hand throttle

Have you checked the air mixture screw setting, mine would adjust itself every hundred miles or so and the engine would stall on tickover. A new spring cured it.

thanks I shall look into that, so far I have just turned the idle screw in a bit more which seems to have cured it but for how long ………..

just cut the end off the rad hose so it is probably fractionally too short but it is on and holding. didn't have a piece of hose with a small enough id in the pile. have to order a new bit so the s3 is mobile again ready for the run to Exeter tomorrow.

. one thing I always initially forget is that you can use a 7 or 8mm socket on jubilee clips instead of a screwdriver

Yes, I forget that too. I can't tell you the number of times I have stabbed my hand when the screwdriver slips.

I've got one of those Flexi drive hose clip tools, it's got a reversable socket for 7 and 8mm and you don't need to get square on to use it.
One of my favourite tools, think it was £8?
Get one!

6 or 7mm or the most common, i only ever use a 1/4 socket and various extensions were needed

Yes, 6 and 7mm are what my tool does, my bad.
Here it is.

and the sort of angles you can use it at if necessary. You can get some serious torgue with it too.

well the s3 made its trip to Exeter without issue yesterday for the start of the second term.

I have one of those, a basic version that only does 7mm (Ithe shines gone off it a bit since I've seen yours with the reversible ends!) - its the only thing that can reach the Perkins by-pass hose, human hands certainly can't!
