Recently removed rear prop shaft as a bearing is noisy.
Now when shutting down engine there is a distinct rattle as the engine stops that certainly wasn't there when the prop shaft was fitted.
Is this normal in "mondo" mode or could this be an weak engine/gearbox mount and the prop shaft was "helping" to keep the engine still?

Chris.

i removed my prop shaft because it was the only thing i could find loose enough to make the whole hippo wobble.Removing it made things a bit better for a while. Now ive narrowed the wobble ie.violent weaving/vibrations to a knackered front drivers side(o/s)drive shaft or/and worn roll bar bushes and drop links.

i was going to replace the prop support bearings and maybe the vcu damper, but now i think that they are ok.

check your drive shafts and anti roll bar for movement i ordered these on sunday might get them tomorrow £12 carrige to roi. £121 for the pair inc. p&p.

now ive reread your initial post, this isnt an answer to your problem, but it took me so long to type this 2 fingured ill post it anyway.

Did you mean just the rear section of the prop shaft? If so you left the inertia of the VCU floating at the end of the first part of the shaft. This then forms a torsionally vibrating system which will resonate as you pass through critical frequencies. Removing the front section shaft and VCU should eliminate it.

Thanks for the info guys - I have removed the full prop shaft.
The rattle is primarily just as the engine stops, but there is also a "click" from somewhere beneath my feet that happens not just when power is applied and then backed off, but that is when it is most obvious. So I don't think it is drive shafts!
Hence thinking it could be a gearbox mount!

Chris.

Right - traced my rattle to the lower engine steady. just need to see if I can get one other than at the stealers!
Grabbed both front drive shafts and gave them a good heave ho. Bit of movement, but the same both sides so not too worried about them at the mo.
Trying to split the prop shaft to get at the support bearing is proving to be a bit of a bitch however!!!
Still, keeps me occupied and out of too much mischief!!!

Chris.

i bought one from the stealerz last week, thought it looked fooked,so i ordered a new one i should have just tried to source the big bush.If were thinking of the lower engine kink on a 2ldi,take it off bet the small bearing is perfect.probly cant buy the bush.....but bet it can be bought, wooda saved me €50+...........

I had the same clicking noise on acceleration, followed 30 miles later by banging underneath the vehicle. Turned out the final drive output spline had gone in the gearbox ( the one that sends the drive to the front right wheel through the IRD).

Couldn't mondo it as i only had rear wheel drive at this stage!

Anyway just replaced the gearbox, secondhand off flea bay, unfortunately after a surprising test drive last night the diesel box i thought i had bought turns out to be a 1.8 petrol box, accelerates like never before but wont do more than 80ish now redlining in 5th gear!!!! Now if only i could fit an overdrive unit i would be over the moon but i'm dreading the fuel economy till i sort this!!!!

On i side note if you're not worried about economy this may be a great mod for off roading.........
