Just bought myself a 2004 Facelift TD4 SE, I knew it had a list of faults when I got it which I am working through and secretly thats why I got it as I enjoy fixing things.

Anyway, while I was dismantling the engine to fit a bypass crankcase breather, EGR Bypass and DPH Silicon Hose Kit I noticed 2 things.

1. A taped up electrical connector dangling near the EGR valve.
2.

Engine Management Fuse 3 has been removed.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards, Karl from Burton on Trent.

Fuse 3 is for the fuel burning heater (FBH) iirc. It's possible that your year doesn't have the FBH, so wouldn't need the fuse.
The connector looks like it is the high pressure fuel rail sensor plug. This being left floating about would suggest it's had the sensor harness upgrade. If so the HPFR sensor plug will now be blue and connect to the ECU on a mini harness of its own.

I couldn't remember which fuse does what. However the FBH is powered by fuse 5 as you said. This makes me wonder what fuse 3 does. I'll look into it tonight.

Thanks HD3, thats a useful document you posted.

So fuse 3 is the CMP sensor, front HO2S, air flow meter. Sounds to me like it ought to be fitted. Any suggestions as to why it might have been removed.

I have to say it seems to be running ok, albeit a bit smoky, hence the upgrades I am in the middle of.

Mind you it says thats for K1.8, KV6 and NAS, so I assume therefore that Fuse 3 is not fitted to a Diesel engine.

Can other TD4 owners have a look in their fuse box just to confirm ?

Check out the running on a light or trailing throttle at 2000 Rpm. Mine and others misfire in those conditions when the EGR is dissabled.

I only purchased my TD4 a week ago, it was only running on 3 and was smoking badly all the time.

I fitted the following mods and it now runs like a dream, good power across the range, very pleased.
  • 5 Piece Derby Performance Hose Kit, with TBar Hose Clamps.
  • EGR Bypass Kit
  • Modified Crankcase Breather that turns filter into an oil separator - ( fit and forget )
  • Removed Lambs Wool Cover off the Air Filter which was new.
  • New Diesel Injector Spill Pipe, old one was weeping and Diesel was pooling round the injectors.
  • 2 Bottles of Wynns Injector cleaner in the tank when the tank low fuel warning light came on.
As I did all this at the same time, I can't say what made the most difference.

Its probably the hoses that made the most difference as the old ones were covered in diesel etc, so they were probably porous and of course simple jubilee clips don't seal the hoses well enough for intercooler hoses etc.
