Hello peeps,

I have a Freelander xdi 2.0litre station wagon, which periodically misfires then cuts out either just into a drive or several miles onwards. By turning the ignition off then back on it restarts no problem, and continues on its merry way! I have recently changed the earth lead but am at a loss where to look next.

I do love my Freelander though, very much.:)

That's a new one on me. I will check it out, when I know what it is and where it is...lol. My main concern though is the intermittent nature of it occurring. 5 days no sign, 6 day it happens then probably another 5 days..... Weird!

Does the no charge light come on when it stops? If not, does the heater fan also stop running? If so it could well be a falling ignition switch. It's a reasonably common problem.

Morning! I'm no great experienced motor mechanic @davidsmith1307 ! I only know what I've done on my motors - which is very little as I drive an L Series :)

Most of my knowledge comes from reading the threads and resolutions on here... therefore I feel like I'm an expert on all things K, KV6 and TD4 - cos they have so many repeat problems :)

What I would ask though is whether there's any smoke (more than normal!) from the engine? I'm guessing not, and that would probably rule out any EGR issue. My initial thought on this is that its electrical. Nodge knows a lot more about these sorts of things than me and his suggestion does sound like a very good candidate. I'd also suggest checking all the electrical connections around the battery, fuse are, ECU - but especial the fuel pump.

Well, having gone through everything, shaking wires and the like, nothing presented itself. Decided to go for a drive to get some fuel, and then, nothing. All the lights on the dash, but not starting, not even a click! Swore at it and it finally started, only to cut out just off the forecourt!

I had no speedo or rev counter until a mile from home. Pulled up outside the house, and now it won't start again! Very dim lights on the dash but all the electrics work fine! If I hadn't replaced my earth lead last week I would go straight to that!!!!!

Do you have access to another battery you could try on the car? Would be a simple test and faulty batteries (and alternators) can cause strange behaviour.

Why did you replace the earth lead? Was it to try and overcome this fault or another reason?

Initially I thought it was the earth lead do that's why I changed it. Due to yesterday's problems I checked the ignition switch and noticed that when I wiggled it the dash lights flickered. Put a new one on today and it now starts again! Hopefully that's it, for now..... Cheers for all your help chaps.:)
