Hello ,

My name is Eelco from the Netherlands , and yesterday i bought my first land rover Minerva , copy of the Series 1 ?
For the belgium army i think ?
Anyway i have some questions ,
My starter motor doenst engange 9 times out of 10 , i think its the old LUCAS type. or Bullet type , i dont know yet.
But there is a ? oil can ? catch can ? petrol filter ? idk infront of the starter motor with hard lines copper.
How easy is it to remove the starter out of a minerva ?
And does somebody have an online work shop manual from the Minerva ? i found the series 1 works shop manual , but its not all the same.
Picture as i got it , dont mind the stupid hazzard lights , their already off , haha.

its bin off the road since 2004 , today i romoved all brake compontents , front brake cilinders were shot , brake shoes fell off . rear cilinders are okay , but will still rebuild them , master cilinder is leaking , new seals needed .
thank god someone in belgium has all the parts i need.

But if somebody has an idea how i can get the start motor off ?
ill make some photo's tomorrow of the situation.

The engine runs lovely , once the starter finnaly does it job.
What oil do u run in these , 20W50 ? like the old SEA 30 in my Ariel motorbike ?

Looks like a 1600 side valve series 1 type engine.
Have you still got the push button starter ?
You may just have a bit of rust on the starter gear(where the gear throws up the shaft when starting) caused by lack of use.

Remove battery conections
& few bolts to get the starter out if needed

Hey. Took some photo of the oil filter ?
Its infront of the starter , if i loosen the gland , will i loose all oil ? Haha.

Yes you can take that union out. Do not start the engine & no oil should come out.

And check the polarity or the motor… it may be positive earthed.dont want you blowing up the dynamo

So today i took off the starter , heavy thing with 1 hand.
looks brand new , teeth on the starter look fine.
but the teeth on the flywheel dont look that good :(
Is that a sepperate part like a teeth ring that u can get , or does it need to replace the whole flywheel ?
Took no pics , sorry :)

Make sure the starter gear throws all the way forward.

Mounted 2 new indicators today , took off the mickey mouse type ontop the fenders.
and started with the olive drab. paint.

I also played a little with the starter , its a bad spot on the flywheel , i found the hand-starter in the back of the rover.
and when the 'grinding gears' and i move the engine with the hand starter like half a full turn , the starter picks up fine.
it also starts very good and fast , but i think theire are damaged teeth on the flywheel.

is it hard to remove the gearbox/clutch assy ?
remove both drive shafts, remove some cluthc linkage , maby in the cab the floor plate ?
and then lower the gearbox ? or is it very hard ?

then i can also inspect my clutch , its like an on/off switch , not really drive-able

would this fit : https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/403319855771

Question ,

in 2 days i got the big scary MOT , but it doenst charge , everything is connected , when i take off the belt , and connect 12v+ to the fat terminal (D?) then it turns like a electric motor , cleaned the brushes , bought a new repro lucas voltage regulator,
i tried to polarise the dynamo , connect A1 to D for 1-2 seconds.

What could it be ? do i have the wrong schematic ?

i got a light on D and A1 and it doesnt turn off.

When i measure , the Field is like 7-8 ohms , and 0,6 ohm on the D therminal

on the lucas , the big terminal is D and small is field right ?

RU Dutch?
I’m not familiar with the Minerva, but S2, S3 Def… I have done some tinkering.

The newer models :
In general the F is connected with the + of the battery (if the car has a negative earth) ,
The other theminal with the light is to help the coil of the generator to get a magnetic field.
As soon the magnetic field is there there will be on both sides of you “warning light” +12 volt (both side +12 volt results in dark (no) light .
In the meantime the voltage in the battery will be a few volts higher so that the battery will be charged..

i do not know what your controle box does….
I think It is a voltage regulator, the old series 1 ..

Is this something that helps you?

Yes im dutch ,
Thanks ill have a read trough , i found a new dynamo not to far away so i maby collect it tomorrow if i cannot get mine working.

Okay, I’m also Dutch and I’m sorry for my pidgin-English.
I do not know what type of engine you have, but be aware that the more modern generators / alternators have a build in voltage regulators.
You can’t use them both.

Proost Rob

Just had a big 'oh ****' moment...

apparently i need to connect + to GND , and - to the other side.... hope i didnt screw anything up

ok its charging now with batt + to chasis.

New problem,
My carb was leaking , bought the very expensive gaskets from Zenith ,
Exacte same leak , when i put contact on , the fuel pump pumps . and like 4 or 5 drips come out of the shaft in front of the engine , butterfly shaft has No play what so ever , new membrame , new jets , new gaskets , new float + needle etc.
Cracked bowl maby ???

i followd this step just now , floated my engine oil with gas... thanks for this tip fck sake.... :(
