Had i been offended by comment #2, I think i've have buggered off long ago to go read a book about having a sense of humour.

Having read every post in this thread (a relatively sensible thing to have done since I created it), I have to say that I think my question has been answered rather well indeed!

There has been a few "useless" comments, but that's how conversation goes! I call it "variety".

There have also been, what I swear to god are, a few lies... 33 mpg?!? Are you riding on bicycle wheels with LPG and a world speed record style fairing?!? I've got my MPG up to just under 24, and having read somewhere that it's supposed to be around there, I think i'm happy! :)
 
At the end of the day this is LoonyZone not one of the other stiff arsed, prim n' proper forums where you'll get banned for farting, if people don't like the way it flow's they can simply feck off .. good on ya for sticking it out fishsponge ;)

To get back to the original topic,
Just done a run from Inverness and The Wirral - average 32mpg.
(I'm not the most law-abiding citizen)
Got a tweak from Dynachip - the best money I've ever spent on a vehicle, totally transformed the car, it's not a truck now.
Will let you know the mpg or the return journey,( if I can be responsible), it pulls like a train, so a lot of temptation to resist.
TD5 De-egr'd , Kenlowed,& hopeflly De-catted for the return.

Oh flakey you should have read through some stuff on here before joining and you would have found that if someone has a real problem they will get a propper answer with some great help and advice (on some occations a member has gone to them to help) on the other hand if a not so serious question is asked like what mpg what tyres ect they will get some abuse/banter its called avin a larf, if you can't handle that then best you foook off but you will be loosing a welth of information and help.

right... an update!

Del (50 pence) made a good point on yesterday while we were at Three Holes...

Having fitted larger tyres, my car now records fewer miles on its odometer than it normally would.

It has probably become more accurate, but comparing MPG with vehicles with varying tyre sizes is kinda pointless because larger tyres will give you better top speed, worse acceleration and different speedometer/odometer readings!

So... I read somewhere that my car having the tyres it has, means my speedo reading is 6% off.

Therefore, with normal tyres, my speedo would tell me that I'm covering 6% more miles than I actually am.

So... to work out my MPG I either have to know what percentage everyone else is at, or just put the 6% back on and compare it to "standard". I think i'll do the latter.

Last tank I achieved, supposedly, 329.7 miles at 23.82mpg.

On a standard Disco, that would have read out as 350.7 miles thereby giving 25.32 mpg.

So... for comparison, I should add 1.5mpg to any figure I calculate.

I actually got 23.82 mpg, but because a standard Disco has smaller wheels, it would have worked out at 25.32 mpg.

Sounds even better! :D

I'll put my calculator away now...

P.S....and I know taking 6% off gives different results to adding 6% on. I assumed by putting on larger tyres, the 6% would have been taken off, so I took my number of miles, divided by 94 and multiplied by 100 (as opposed to dividing by 100 and multiplying by 106)! :D

quite an interesting thread!

does anyone know how a 200tdi compares to a 300 mpg wise? not sure which engine to go for.. 300tdi is an extra 150 on insurance!?

I can only speak of my own cars, but our TDi 200 was about 10-15% better on fuel than any of the 300's that we have/have had.
Don't understand the insurance difference as there is no difference in power, so maybe down to the age of the vehicles in question?
 
Recently I've only been doing short trips round town [less than 5 miles] I did 116 miles from a full tank [double click off ] and it cost me £30.60 to fill it back up again. Worked out at 21mpg :eek: 300 auto egr blank ,de-cat viscous removed. Ive just stuck a new air filter on £5.36 from my local Partco.Hope to get an improvement :doh:
 
More mpg! Thaught it'd be worse. Well that's good. I don't understand the insurance either, one is 1991 and the other is 1995!? Obviously the earlier being the 200.
 
...FishSponge, just read the thread and it looks like noone has helped you with your rev counter....apologies if you've now fixed it. You'll find a single wire fixed to the back of the alternator...from memory it's to the 'w' spade connection....mine showed the same symptoms and I found this connection loose...remove the connection and gently squeeze with a pair of pliers to close up the female spade connector to 'help' the connection. Anyway it worked on mine and might help.

Back on thread My 300 tdi auto es gives me late 20's if I'm really careful. (My series 2a with a 200 tdi gives me 37 if driven carefully, ie Grandma on a Sunday!)
