what's the "from the factory" mpg for a 1997 300TDi Disco? anyone know?

Given that so many people (including me) get only just above 20 mpg, I'm truly shocked that so many of you manage 30 mpg!

So... my larger AT tyres aren't helping, the extra weight from the mods isn't helping, the 2" lift probably isn't helping and the engine has done 147,000 miles.

On that basis, 21-23 mpg doesn't seem too unreasonable to me, but if some of you are getting 30, i'd love to try and move generally in that direction!

I know i've had a decat pipe fitted. How does that affect the vehicle? More power? Worse fuel consumption?

Also, what is this "EGR"? What does "EDC" stand for too?

Finally, what is the "optimum" motorway speed? I remember it being something like 58 mph for petrol cars, but what's the value for a 300TDi Disco?

If you want to be accurate, then get a sat nav/road angel and check its speed against your speedo and apply any percentage difference to the reading.

I checked on my satnav and the speedo is spot-on. If it reads "70", I'm doing 70. I guess the larger tyres took the slack out of the speedo reading!

Also, I notice you're in Huntingdon... so am I! Interesting fact of the day.

.

So if the guys that cars have better MPG have standard wheels and tyres, then thy will be recording more miles. ( wont be much about 3/5 % ).

I got an R plate 300 when it was on the road a couple of months ago was getting 33-35mpg all town and country type road driving and some towing.:D:D me very happy with that. Although it will probably drop a bit now ive replaced most of the rust holes with new steel.

sounds good to me! :D

So anyway... back on topic...

right... so we both have a 1997 300TDi. Yours is standard apart from a snorkel. Mine also has a snorkel, but does almost 10 miles per gallon less than yours! My mods can't account for all that, surely...

How many miles has yours done? I'm up to 147,000...

i take it them off road tyres going off the size of them are a very aggresive off roads tyre which won't help neither.

I'm getting at least 30 out of my 300tdi 1994 D1, no egr and no cat.

Its well serviced, and my journey to/from work is 25 miles each way, 50% bendy roads and 50% dual carriageway. I tend to find she is happiest at 55-65mph and will chug along like that all day, i dont try and pull away hard and take my time reaching that speed.

I find the fact that she dont like cruising at 80-85mph like the mondeo i have quite realxing, I just sit there relaxing and watching the scenery and traffic go by, i get home much more relaxed in the landy than the mondeo too. Over the 25 miles, the drop in sped makes no difference really and less chance of losing the license too.

Maybe the ones that do lower mileage are the ones that have had the pump altered from standard??

Also i dont carry any crap in the back (yet), and keep the tyre pressures on the high side.

Totally agree with the above, I've removed EGR (not de-catted yet), run 235/70/16 AT's with 31 psi front & 33 psi rear.

Most of my MPG reading's have been taken whilst car is fully loaded with people/gear or towing. Thing to remember with these is that once you go faster than 60 mph it guzzles juice faster than Jordan on a 1st date;)

What rev's do you normally drive at? I have just got a D2 TD5 Auto and am finding that I am driving mostly below 2000rpm, where does the turbo kick in? Is it better to drive with a few more revs (power) than to plod along?

ah... thanks for that!

How does this affect the emissions test during the MOT though? Surely it can't help...

Just blocking the EGR (fit the plate at the exhaust manifold end) will IMPROVE your fuel consumption by about 20%, so 20 mpg would become an instant 24 - 25.

This is amazing too... by blocking the thing that is supposed to help emissions, your MPG improves by around 20%. You therefore burn less fuel, which helps emissions! Surely the EGR is just fooling the system - if you are burning fuel, the emissions are being produced. The only way to stop emissions is to either collect them up (which is not what the EGR does) or to burn less fuel, surely?!?

No idea - it's an auto and the rev counter doesn't work! Well, it works occasionally, but generally stays at zero unless the engine is idling, in which case it flickers between 0 and 1000. The engine idles wonderfully though, so it's just a faulty wire, I guess...

Blanking EGR won't really affect MOT, in fact my Disco's emissions are now lower. The turbo for me kick's in at 2500revs.

so why on earth did Land Rover decide to go to the effort of fitting an EGR which (a) costs money, (b) adds to the complexity of the engine, (c) harms fuel efficiency and (d) harms emissions?!?

It doesn't make sense...
