miles are racking up more than they should

so this will sound weird i have a disco 2 , 51 plate , in 2015 there was a defender engine put in totalling 58000 miles , the number on the clock for the disco was 147000 i never got it corrected so each year its been motd with the numbers going up as they should 147000 then 149000 and so on , everything has been fine till a couple weeks ago , mot in january shows 169000 on the clock which was correct , its now showing 275000 on the clock now bear in mind this car is used for the school run only ,i first noticed it when my wife said shed got more miles for her £50 than normal she normally gets around 150 miles but she noticed she got 280 miles this time i obviously knew it wasnt right thats when i saw she had apparently racked up and extra 100,0000 miles in 8 weeks
ive just checked the mots going back to when the defender engine was put in and each year the mileage looks fine going by that i reckon the engine has only done around 79,000
so looking for help with this one and also wheres best to get the mileage corrected to suit the actual engine

im done with google im afraid , definitely need real life recommendations last year my key wouldnt work put it into a well known landrover specialist in glasgow , they had it for 8 monthssomething to do with bcm module apparently whilst in there it was problem after problem needed windows fixed locks fixed door latches got it back start january with a 2400 bill for stuff i didnt even know was wrong with it 4 pages worth , i put it in there after being on google so no more google for me
 
I suspect that's for a replacement odometer so it matches the MOT. Plus if it went down by 100k it would cause problems with a vehicle check. I had issues with a vehicle history check for the car I bought and that was just cos an MOT person had missed off a digit.
 
Mileage is always based on the car not the engine. If it's been changed to km, changing it back to miles should correct the value automatically.

But knocking a random amount of miles off the mileage based on the condition of the engine is fraud and can get you into trouble..

Are you sure? It’s only an offence if you reduce the mileage to try and increase the vehicles value. If you fit a replacement odometer, it doesn’t have to show the “correct” mileage.
 
so the strange mileage up to 275000 miles is fine now it was km just pressed the button for 20 seconds and its went back to normal , but my next question about correcting the mileage was about the new engine that was put in the car in 2015 , new engine 58000 miles put in 2015 car showed 147000 in 2015 ( original engine) so id like to get that corrected i have all the mots since well before and after and of course the documents of the new engine

Of course you can get it done. Find someone that does remaps and they'll be able to sort it for you. And of course it's not fraud either, only becomes an issue if you sell it and don't inform the buyer of "corrected" mileage. That's clocking.

You are right of course. If it's properly documented and the potential buyer is informed then there's no issue.

You don't go off the mileage of the engine but by how far the car's driven. So there's nothing to 'correct'.
 
Also if you change it to 58000 + a few extra that it's driven a new buyer may go off the MOT's and assume its had a new odometer and add the 58000 to the 170000. I know you can explain it but you could be causing yourself more hastle than it's worth.
 
You might be honest with the next buyer but will he be honest when he sells it on. Everything on the car has done the high mileage except the engine, if I was looking at buying it, I would be put off cos these things always sound fishy when you are parting with hard earned cash.

exactly , and i have all the paperwork for the new engine and every mot complete history and every receipt for everything down to bulbs

Correction to what though?

There is nothing illegal in clocking a car. What becomes illegal is if you sell it advertised as a certain mileage, if you know it isn't true.

In your case, you fitted a 2nd hand engine. Do you have any proof and guaranteed mileage of the replacement engine? If not, then legally you don't know, nor can claim the known mileage of the replacement engine.

In your case, the engine may well have done less miles. But the rest of the vehicle hasn't. As a for example, if you had a brand new car and after 10 months and 5000 miles the engine expired. The dealer would, under warranty fit a new engine. But they wouldn't reset the mileage on the vehicle.

Your case is similar, just a lot older vehicle and a used engine.

If you want to get the mileage adjusted, then there are plenty of legal ways to do this. But it is worth being aware of the legal risks should you sell the vehicle on and claim it has less miles on it.
