Just in the process of buying a 2004 Defender XS
The HPl check has thrown up a mileage discrepancy
The MOT record seems fine

Feb 2010. 46,385
May 2011. 59,594
May 2012. 65,931
May 2013. 70,649
May 2014. 74,699
July 2015. 76,818
Aug 2016. 83,279
Aug 2017. 89,309
Aug 2018. 94,260

But there’s two DVLA entries in the records
July 2014. 175,000 !!
Feb 2015. 76,000

The 175,000 coincided with a change of owner. So maybe they entered the mileage incorrectly on the V5?

Can’t see it doing 100,000 miles in two months.
But it’s made me wary of this Landy, which is a shame as otherwise it’s really nice looking example.

Anybody got any thoughts?

I would have to agree a typo.

Have you checked the Mot history? Or is that where the hpi get there info anyway?

I will check with the owner. He lives 185 miles away from me though.

The MOT history looks fine and the owner has all the old MOT’s.

The discrepancy comes at a change of owner in July 2014
Where the mileage was recorded as 175,000

The issue is, that it flags up on any HPI check and (if l can’t sort out with the DVLA) will make it more difficult to sell in the future, should we decide to sell it.

Just to update this.

I finally wrote in to the DVLA enclosing copies of all the old MOT’s plus service records.

And they wouldn’t budge. The girl l spoke to confirmed the “175,000” V5 entry and despite me proving it was impossible that it was correct, and 75,000 was the correct mileage, they wouldn’t alter the records.

So in effect, as it’s down to the seller to send the V5, you could sell a car and enter a silly mileage on the V5

The buyer wouldn’t actually find out until they came to sell the vehicle, whereupon it would flag up on any HPI check and there would be nothing they could do about it.

I argued this with the DVLA but they just said that they won’t update data that an owner has entered.
Despite documented proof that it’s a mistake. And l don’t mean a few thousand miles, l mean a 1 or 2 entered in front of the correct mileage.

So, if you are buying a car, make sure you watch the seller enter the mileage before you leave them to post the V5

Do it online when your buying the car it takes 2 mins & forget all the postage part of it iirc entering the mileage
